I've never thought much of very long-range demographic predictions, just cause it assumes what is true now will be true forever.

I wish I had a better memory. I've heard the white minority by year x before, but my fuzzy memory tells me the year was much sooner. Whites to become minority in U.S. by 2020 for example.

Of course according to studies while I was in elementary school we were supposed to run out of oil and coal about 10 years ago.

Fertility rates drop as affluence and social / geographic mobility decline. I'm intersted in knowing if this study accounted for that inevitable drop in the Hispanic population as well as the effect a protracted recession (or at least, significantly lower economic growth) will have on immigration.


I'm more concerned about this:

The low cost of cheap labor has been instrumental in the recent housing boom and the continued relatively low food prices.

I can assure you the cost of rounding up and expelling Latin-American immigrants would far outweigh the current cost of social services, not to mention exert upward pressure on the cost of goods and services provided by low / marginally skilled laborers.

it really tickles me when i see people complain about whites becoming a minority in america and then acting as if their underlying bigotry isn't the reason that they're bothered by this at all. What other reason could it be, because why else would it matter.

Also, people don't realize what we really gain from illegals. People cite stuff such as x dollars each year in services going to illegals. Most of these services are actually in the forms of public schools, which are already built and being used regardless, they just become more crowded. Not saying thats a good thing, but its not the end of the world either. Most illegals don't take services because they are afraid of being found out.

Also, we gain plenty by having them here. Due to their unique status they are willing to take jobs that many americans feel too good for, and are willing to take lower wages for jobs that americans would accept but at higher wages. This allows our costs of certain basic needs to maintain reasonably price in comparison to what we are accustom. Hispanics in general- illegal or not- also provide a service to our economy because they buy things that we don't that are american made, for example, 25% of american automobiles are purchased by those of hispanic decent.

also, i too have heard this whites the minority stuff many years ago, and it was some time around 2030. i remember stating to my dad, and he said "i remember hearing about this in the 70's, i think it was supposed to have happened by now."

There is no question that racism, or at least a discomfort with other races underlies the premise of the thread.
