I'm spending spring break in Belgrade.

Apparently a mob of 1000 people threw rocks and broke windows at the US embassy in response to our support of independence for Kosovo.

So... what do you think?

are you sure you should be traveling at all?

i'm sure that by doing so, you are further supporting the patriarchy in some form or fashion

only by thinking about nothing and smoking lots of weed are you sure to find oneness with your dirty and smelly brethren

i am the divine spirit that runs through the winds and the rivers

i am the alpha and the omega

and you are still a poser wanna-be liberal douchebag who strives for the approval of every nasty lesbo that crosses your path

...

note that liberal douchebag is one statement, I don't think you are a douche, only that you really REALLY want to be one for some reason

There shouldn't be any concern. Do not view hatred for the American government for hatred of Americans. I never had problems in Serbia and that was right after the American bombing.

People hate when you try to mask your nationality.

in my limited experience, the serbs don't really care about us

they like our money, which is still way stronger than serbian funbucks

when we were confused, some serbs helped us find where we were trying to go

the only problem we had was with strange-looking gypsy children who had designs on my friend's carton of camels

of course this was in october, long before the current events

i did notice that europeans (at least in hungary and serbia) are able to separate normal americans from the actions of our government

since it's the serbian prime minister calling out the american government, i think the everyday serb won't have beef with american tourists

yeah I'm actually not as concerned about my physical well-being as I am about the possibility of administrative difficulties

my friend in Czech rep. who is planning to travel with me sent this:

Quote :
"Subject: Travelling within the Schengen zone

Dear All,

I need to inform you about information on travelling within the
Schengen zone for those foreigners who have obtained the first
Long-term residency visa (visa) in the Czech Republic.

As I have discovered this weekend, these people who obtain their
first visa for the Czech Republic and do not have a visa requirement
for other Schenegen states, are automatically loosing this right to
travel within the Schengen zone.

Once the first visa is collected at the Czech embassy, from this
date the foreigner may travel within the Schengen zone only for a
period of 90 days. After this period, this person would need a
valid Schenegen visa from the country he/she is planning to visit.

If such a person would travel without a valid Schengen visa to other
Schengen state and would be stopped by a police, he/she would then
be interned and criminal act would be held against him/her for
trying to illegally enter this country. After that this person would
be escorted to the Czech border and file about this would be put in
the Schengen system.

At this moment I do not have much information on how we could
arrange for you Schengen visas before the first extension, but I
will be in contact with the Ministry of Interior this week and
hopefully will receive more details on this.

I had a really terrible experience last Saturday with two of my
clients who were stopped by the German police during their random
check up and were held at the police station in Germany for 12
hours. Even they were released we still have to finalize the
criminal act that is being held against them.

To avoid such a situation for now, please follow my instructions and
do not travel to other Schengen states until we receive more details
from the Foreign Police on a current situation.

I will inform you as soon as I receive any other official information.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,

Petra Sumerauerová"

okay, open question, two parts:

do you think it is foolish to go to a city in which the US embassy had been the target of a few days of rioting and had recently been set on fire?

part two,

would you go?

no, yes

HOWEVER

you are supposed to register with the local authorities within 24 hours of your arrival

i'd do that, because if you don't and it causes problems, well, the us embassy phone is not going to answered

yeah that's an interesting point

typically if you check into a hotel (or hostel, I suppose) the staff registers you with the local authorities

I am actually flying INTO Prague

hanging out in and around Prague, going to Brno to see friends

then on to Budapest

and only then to Belgrade

but I do like the Czech yourself thing... if we can think of a good one for Budapest we'll have a theme for subtitling this project

I just arranged to have a video camera with me... this is getting interesting
