Anyone ever been on a week day before? I need to go there tomorrow to renew my license, the website doesn't mention what time it opens though -- also called their # and it just rings, no recording with times or anything.

Any help would be appreciated

Sean

if you're just renewing, it shouldn't take too long. 45 mins at the longest i would think. However I went there to get a NC license when I moved here from out of state. I was in line for almost 4 hours

It's hit or miss.. I've tried going at 8am and you have to wait 90 minutes, the last time I went at 230 and waited 10 minutes.

Also, it's a lot more $$$ to renew it now (4 dollars for each year the ID is valid) so mine was 32 dollars.

^^ negative.

Most people go before work, during lunch, or leave work early to go. Just avoid those times to miss the crowd. I usually go at 2 or 3 and don't wait long.

I've also been told that to renew a license you will have to take a road sign test, and a vision test. Im not concerned about either as I took a quick look at the road sign part of their manual on the website, but can anyone tell me if its multiple choice, match them up, or where you look into the machine and they ask you what the sign means? Ive seen/heard different things from different places.

^ you look into a machine for both

the eyes is rows of letters (they usually start at the hardest)
the signs are various signs that you just tell the person what they are (they were all very commons ones, except the pennant no passing sign)

The Cary DMV is awesome. The wait is unbelievably short in comparison to the wait at the Avent Ferry DMV. I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes. I also saw two people who did not pass the sign test and saw the examiner hand them a cheat sheet and let them go study for a few minutes before retesting them.

It's a little known secret but yes, you can make an appointment.

As for how well they adhere to the whole purpose of an appointment... I'll find out soon because I have to renew mine by mid March.

Open: 8 AM-5PM

Appointments: Yes

Don't go between 12-2 because there will be a long, slow, miserable line.

the one in garner was slammed with a 3 hr wait and two people working, I drove to cary and was done in 30 mins, 7 uniformed people working and one other person running the DL machine.

It's not any better than any other DMV. I've waited at that one for 3/4ths of forever. I really feel sorry for the people doing a road test that day. I'm sure it turned out to be an all day event for them.

It's random. Whether you have to wait one hour or only 10 minutes is based entirely on luck.

DO NOT GO TO THE DMV IN CARY
I spent 3 hours waiting in line to find out I was missing one piece of paper when I got my permit. My fault, but I came back and ONLY had to wait 2 hours.
It would be a better use of time to drive to the avent ferry one, or any other one.

That can happen at any DMV. Always make sure you have everything you need before standing in line for 3 hours, dur.

Went to the one in Cary yesterday --- got there 20 minutes before they opened, spent a total of about 35 minutes inside. Thanks for all the information.

how to jump to the head of the line:

go to any local DMV. Just yell out "la migra!!"

all the Mexicans will scramble out of there

wait time is over
