I, too, like modern architectural and interior design. You have to take care in making sure that the design doesn't appear cold, though.

you can redesign your house... a lot of modern design can be done cheaply if you're willing to invest the time

lots of things can be done with recycled materials as well I suggest you install accent lighting with custom built LED lamps 2/19/2008 12:51:24 PM |

god, ain't that the truth. cookie cutter neighborhoods are so appauling to me. I'd rather live scruntched up in a subdivision like that than in one of the many cookie cut lowcost provider neighborhoods that have sprouted around my town.
but honestly, land and trees > modern architecture2/19/2008 1:03:17 PM |

i know no one else watches HGTV. but they just did a countdown on sunday of the coolest kitchens (or something like that). it was AMAZING. they even had a green kitchen...yayyyy. all the stuff was so so cool. but ofcourse all the people lived in like 8000 sq ft houses and their kitchens were like 1500sq ft (not a joke). maybe it is on the hgtv website (if that even exists). if you like interior design i'd watch hgtv...it is so addicting. some of the stuff isn't that cool (overly thematic, etc), but some of it is cool. and they have some cool tips for redecorating on the cheap (w/o looking cheap) 2/19/2008 1:03:53 PM |

^^ There are some houses and interior design created in the 60s that have stood the test of time IMO.
"^^^Wasn't that second house in The Big Lebowski?"
Yes, the architect was John Lautner, whom I love. It's the Goldstein-Sheats residence, which is one of my favorites.

negative there Symeguy. i'm just saying i'd rather have a place on a big plot of land than a house with modern architecture. i'd cook over an open fire if i could have several acres.2/19/2008 2:02:39 PM |
SymeGuy69 All American 11036 Posts user info edit post |
I don't understand what one has to do with the other.
Unless you're saying you'd rather have land with NO house and cook on a fire in a field than live in suburbia?

there's a good chance some of them will
it's also possible to design in a way that will go beyond the trendy
but as all design, many things go
new -> dated-> retro
so it can always come back around again
i mean i think that giant sunglasses and oversized t-shirts with leggings on girls looks stupid, but a 17 year old thinks it's 80s retro cool
eventually, though you get enough distance that it doesn't matter anymore
like if you decided to move into a colonial revival2/19/2008 2:24:15 PM |

If I ever get around to finishing my living room and doing my kitchen I'll post pics.
The living room is close. Nice sofa. Blonde maple floors (ok...they're laminates, but they look good.) Walnut credenza and end tables on chrome legs (Florence Knoll design.) Light blue walls with a little gray tint. Brushed nickel accessories (floor vents, curtain rods, etc.)
The kitchen is going to be a ton of work though. The floors are down. The orange linoleum counters and wallpaper have to go. Probably replacing the counters with copper and a butcher block top on the island. Planning a distressed black finish on the existing cabinets. I have a stainless stove and microwave/hood, but I have to cut the cabinets for the new stove to fit because my previous stove was a drop-in model. Add a new dishwasher and refrigerator and it should be about right. 2/19/2008 2:24:53 PM |
