Quote :
"From Thomas Edison to American Idol, this is the complete history of the music that shaped and defined five generations. 3 million records and 300,000 CDs containing more than 6 million song titles. It's the undisputed largest collection of recorded music in the world. About half of the recordings are new and never played, and every genre of 20th century music is represented. There are countless rare recordings worth hundreds, or even thousands of dollars each on the collectibles market. Organized and cataloged, the collection is meticulously maintained and housed in a climate-controlled warehouse. The estimated value of this amazing collection is more than $50 million."

heard this guy interviewed on npr yesterday

he used to buy semi trucks of records being either taken out of places, or reasons unknown

without knowing the contents.

it's impressive, but dont think there aren't dupes. (although some of the dupes could be a good thing.. he mentioned one of his semi purchases included a few hundred copies the first pressing of the first zz top single, now going individiually for like $200+)

[im jealous as f0ck]

Wow, that's a lot of stuff.

Sorta lame that it's listed on ebay, though.

i'm sure the guy realized that as cool as this might be he probably wasted his entire life on this. and the fact that some aren't even open, music is meant to be enjoyed, expressed, and shared.

This guy sucks

^^record collecting, like any other kind of collecting, is a hobby that some people enjoy for its own sake. Obviously this guy has taken it to the extreme, but still. don't be hatin'!

^^^well he did share it. he had a store for 40 years. also, he apparently has been having health problems and that is part of why he's selling. ALSO he's made it very clear that he would prefer if a university or museum purchased his music so that it would be shared with the public.

i have a feeling the majority of what he has never made it to cd (and thus probably didn't make it to mp3 either)

Supposedly this guy's store was the kind where they try to charge you $35 for used Led Zeppelin records in average condition.
