Most all areas around campus you can't have more than 4 unrelated people living in the same house. Not sure if that's what you were trying to do, just letting you know. 2/20/2008 9:11:05 PM |

Couldn't find a link to the actual city code, but the above is a pretty credible allusion to it.2/20/2008 10:49:08 PM |

the law is true, i don't have a link either, but I was made aware of this by a landlord who owned a 4 bedroom home with a bonus room. She made it clear to the tenants that no more than 4 GIRLS were to live in the house at the same time. She didn't make any references to letting a guy live there though, so I don't know if it's specifically 4 people or 4 women, but that's what I was told. 2/21/2008 10:16:44 AM |

I'd always heard that was an old law designed to prevent brothels.

that's what the landlord said. It's not something that cops are going to be busting down doors, but it is a violation of law and therefore she was just trying to stay legit.
Lots of towns have a law similar to this, especially small college towns. Used to be used as an excuse to keep brothels out, but more recently used as an excuse so people don't have to live next door to some house with a dozen college kids partying their butts off in it. It can cause a real eye-sore in the community, some say 2/21/2008 12:04:18 PM |

Also keeps frat houses from popping up in the middle of neighborhoods.
As long as you're not flagrant about it, you can usually get away with it. Just be aware that you are technically in violation of the law, so if you get in trouble for something else and it's discovered you have too many roommates, someone might have to go or you could theoretically all be evicted.
This also means only 4 people can be on the lease, so make sure whoever isn't is either a)reliable and has a steady source of income, or b)you draw up a separate contract with them so they're legally responsible for their share of the rent. 2/21/2008 2:56:19 PM |

Zoning inspector came to my house last yr, we had 5 and we got a 30 day notice to move somebody out. What that equated to was we moved 1 bed to a storage room for a day, brought the inspector back, showed him the house, then moved the bed/roomate back in and it was fine. Truthfully, the zoning inspector for this area doesn't care, its just in his job detail to come look, he was the one that told us to do the bed moving thing. 3/28/2008 8:05:17 AM |
