I missed the game and spent all night with my dog Peyton, the 3 year old great dane. We were supposed to move into a new house next week that I pretty much bought so that he would have a bigger yard. I had him kennelled this week while I finished the house. Today they vet called me and said that he needed emergency surgery for bloat, a stomach condition that is a threat to larger dogs. I won't go into detail but his case is pretty complicated and its basically a crap shoot on whether or not he makes it through the end of the week - if he does he should make a full recovery.

For the record he's named after my ex-gf's grandfather, not Peyton Manning.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for someone to make an asshole comment.

Here's the boy mid-stride. Probably my favorite dog picture ever.

bloat's an awful thing

i'm sure the vet will say this, but from now on give him smaller meals several times a day to avoid a repeat.

are you going to just have it flipped, or is it going to be tacked to his abdominal wall?

^^^ They tacked it. The problem with recovery is that it happened too close to his esophagus for them to do any kind of repair work. Right now we can just hope that the vitality will return to the tissue with restoration of bloodflow. The vets weren't even sure enough to give me ballpark odds on that happening.

Thanks for the support everybody.

Good luck man. My dog passed recently from cancer, I haven't lost anyone close in my family yet, plus I grew up with him, so it was especially hard. I like to think he enjoyed his time on Earth. 3 years is too short, best of luck.

I just called the 24 hour vet ICU where he is for an update. He had low body temperature and low blood pressure following surgery around 6, but those have returned to acceptable levels. He has a bit of a heart arrhythmia, but thats fairly common after that surgery and is usually temporary. It looks like he'll make it through the night. Now I just have to hope that his stomach heals in the next 48 hours.

Thanks for the support everybody, it really does mean a lot to me.

that sucks. Great Danes rule...we owned several of them when I was growing up. Unfortunately, longevity is not their strong suit.

Big dogs go "ruff, ruff"; little dogs go "arf, arf". That's an old YMCA cheer from my days as a camper and counselor.

I hope that your dog gets better.

We think bloat killed my dog, Dawg. He died this past summer, two weeks shy of 12. It was by far the hardest thing I have ever had to come to terms with. In fact, I still have his picture on my desk at work and on my mantel. He also has a brick in his memory at the alumni center.

I do not wish that pain on anyone, and I hope your dog makes it through, Mr. Joshua.

additionally, feeding him on an elevated surface (use a bowl riser or put it on something that's more at his level) can keep this from happening...if i'm not mistaken (and i may be, as it's been five years since i worked as a vet tech), feeding them at a low level (in addition to larger meals) increases the amount of air that they swallow...feeding them at a higher level minimizes the amount of gulping
