I've been searching high and low since I got to NCSU this semester for anybody else who is in love with this band like I am, and I've found nobody. Not even anyone who remotely knows who the band is. For anyone who doesn't know, they're a post-rock experimental-ish band from Iceland. All of their songs are in Icelandic, but they put out music that I'm pretty sure is the music of angels. It's absolutely life altering.

Anyway, just looking for any other avid Sigur Rós fans out there to share my interest... if you don't like Sigur Rós, let me know if you like any of these other bands. I like discussing good music with fans of good music.

Arcade Fire
Coldplay
The Flaming Lips
Keane
Klaxons
Modest Mouse
Muse
Mute Math
Of Montreal
Radiohead
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Sufjan Stevens

love sigur ros, saw them in durham when they played. their new dvd 'heima' is beautifully shot. also, most of their songs are hopelandic, a language they invented.

All of their songs aren't in Icelandic.

Some of them are in Hopelandish.

Either way, they make good records...that never cease to put me to sleep.

Funny you would mention Heima...

I've been e-mailing the VP of Marketing over at Sigur Rós' label, and they're interested in doing a Heima screening at NCSU assuming there would be enough interest. It'd be free of charge, kind of a DIY thing, but if you guys would be interested I can try to start forward with setting up a date.

I'm a big fan of Sigur Ros for a couple of years. I have driven to DC to see them and made it a point to plan a Boston trip so I could catch at the Berkley School of Music. It is great chill music.

Sigur who?

That sounds like a band that not everybody in the world has heard of.

I remember reading the Ágætis byrjun review in The Technician freshman year. I was too big a fan of GYBE! at that time to get into Sigur Ros like I am now.

But yeah, Sigur Ros is awesome. You aren't alone.

I liked them, but there isn't a tremendous amount of variety between songs and I got bored with them kinda quickly.

Fun fact:

The concept of Hopelandic is "bullshit" according to Birgisson. He's just singing gibberish.

^^^ Well, I haven't really become great friends with anyone here at State since I started. All my friends I knew before NCSU love the same types of music, but it's been hard for me to get to know anyone at NCSU whose favorite artists aren't Fall Out Boy, Rascall Flatts (sp?), or some horrid pseudo-Metal band. That's why I really wanna go to Chapel Hill in the fall - I know this kind of subculture exists here at NCSU, but it's harder to find than at Chapel Hill. What can I say, I'm lazy.

um id like to see where you heard that. it was in an interview where i heard the band themselves say that their older stuff like () was totally hopelandish but most their newer stuff was icelandic with some hopelandish mixed it. never said anything it being gibberish.

There's an interview on YouTube with them on NPR and it's the most awkward interview ever. The part where Jonsi says it's total bullshit is the only redeeming part.

Love sigur ros. Saw them in NYC with Radiohead and the Merce Cunningham dance company. Was like on the 5th row! The 2 bands alternated sets playing improv for the dance company. Was crazy rediculous.

Radiohead, Sigur ros and MC dance company all under one roof was kinda rediculous. Got to meet a couple people from Sigur Ros, although no one from Radiohead came out during intermission. This was back in highschool though.

I always thought Crowe used the live performance from the Kilbourne Show since that song hadn't been recorded in a studio yet. But it turns out it was just some random performance in Europe.

Yeah, they are pretty good.

I like a few of their songs a whole lot, Saeglopur is probably my favorite, but many of them sound so similar that I can't listen to more than a few in a row.

I still haven't figured out why it's all right for indie groups to sound the same in all their songs, but not ok for mainstream artists.

i love sigur ros. im not super into what you are probably referring to as 'indie', but i will say there is a huge difference in having a similar sound in all your songs and having the exact same song structure in every single one of your songs and then beyond that using the exact same keys/chords in all your songs.

i mean you can literally predict the song structure instantly of 90% of the bands played on commercial radio. even worse, when a band tries to break out of that mold its usually even more disastrous.

see linkin park. their songs have nearly identical structures, builds, etc. EXTREMELY predictable vocal patterns, guitarwork and everything. and, while all of their stuff is terrible imo, they sink to a new low when they try and think 'outside the LP box' like the last 2 singles they have had.

and PS its not always about having your songs sound that much different either. a song doesnt have to be complex to be a good song. at that point it comes down to personal preference i guess. even tho i would have to argue certain people definitely have a more musically inclined personal preference. and the best way i can think to describe that is that there are bands that i can identify that write good music that i dont care to listen too that often such as a band like Arcade Fire who writes infinitely better music than most commercial bands, but i dont particularly like them.

Yes you're very right, but i don't think this automatically means a band isn't good (not defending linkin park, i hate them) . I mean look at all the classic rock artists. The beatles had many identical structures, vocal patterns, guitarwork and everything. They were famous for having that "sound" that you could just sing along to and keep up with. This made them very popular. But then you look at like Dylan or something, and he was popular for how different many of his songs were and his singing style. So i guess you could say the Beatles had a "new" style also, but it was still predictable and very basic harmonic vocal patterns (for todays standards), and Dylan was also popular for being different but had very different melodic and vocal patterns.

But then you look at today. Many of the popular bands have predictable patterns, but i guess what makes bands stand out is if they're DIFFERENT. It's like compared to the 60's, people have done so many more things, and played so many diffferent styles. So to stand out today you have to come up with a 'new sound' or do something someone hasn't done before. So i guess it's just that much harder to become popular now then decades ago.
