I've heard that any Dell OS install disc will load on a Dell computer and won't require a serial. Is this true? If I buy a second-hand Dell without an operating system can I just buy/borrow somebody's old copy of Windows XP to get set up? Is there even such a thing as an EULA with a Windows OS through Dell?

dell typically puts the CAL on the side of the case, your serial is there.

Do those stickers usually indicate whether it is for XP Home or Pro or is it just a serial?

Dell windos OS Install CDs generally carry a volume OEM key built in that allows you to install windows without a key (or activation) on any Dell computer. Non dell computers will require activation. Atleast this is how the one I have works.

Generally the sticker on the case should say pro or home.

Non-OEM installs of some versions will work with the dell-OEM key on the computer. I remember that worked with my desktop many years back. In that case, it will ask for the key though and you may run into validation errors upon running windows update.

If you buy a second dell without the OS I'll say there's a 50/50 chance the OEM install will either not work or will not detect OEM license info (in the bios I think?) and ask you for a serial. If you install it with another machine's OEM serial key, you may run into windows genuine validation issues.
