And order something. When the guy was done I told him I wanted to pay with a card. He then asked me for the card number, which I gave, but then he asked for the expiration date. After that he also asked for the three-digit number on the back. So I didn't give it to him and called my bank to cancel my card.

Is this how they take orders over the phone? It seemed sketch as hell and I've had my card jacked once before from leaving it with a waiter so I get super paranoid about these things.

they probably do need the exp date. the card code may be used as well - its purpose is for merchants to make sure you don't have a stolen card.

I don't do many phone orders, but I've seen it with online transactions and once when I gave my number at a store.

The guy probably thought YOU were the one trying to pay with a stolen card.

how else do you think they can process the payment?

is this thread for real? i guess so, cause it would be a silly way to troll.

every time i order anything without the card present, they ALWAYS ask for the 3 digit number on the back. its their way of verifying that the card is likely present and that its not just a stolen credit card number.

i know dominos doesnt ask for it, but i could see pizzamerica typing your info into 3rd party paypal type shit and needing that number.

if its bad for anyone to have it, i better go to the bank tomorrow... cause google and buy.com and all my phone company and etc etc etc have that little code.

card number + exp date are common, well, anywhere you use credit cards ever

but only a few times is the 3-digit code requested, and it's usually something online like paypal

but i think I have ordered take-out online and used the 3-digit code w/o hesitation

u can usually fight whatever charges appear on most cc's - yell long enough at ur bank, and they'll fold - no exp?

Well yeah. The reason why I got so paranoid was that sushi place in mission valley by the ABC store used my credit card on a 600 dollar bar tab the night I left it there.

They are under new management, and I've always wondered if that had anything to do with it.

I worked at a pizza place once, and we did not need the 3 digit code on the back.

Before I started working there, some employees had stolen a couple people's card info and did some serious damage. The kids were fired, and the people who had their money stolen get free pizza forever (I think).

^^ That's a good point though. We don't mind giving it online, but we're worried about over the phone. Maybe its because its an actual person, and you never can tell who is dishonest and who isn't.

unless your buying something online where it asks for that information,

you should NEVER GIVE OUT THE EXPIRATION DATE OR THE VERIFICATION CODE ON THE BACK

i'd rather tell it to one person than enter it into a computer where more people will see it. actually, they likely all end up in the computer anyway. and its already in there to begin with to be compared against. thats what that fraud protection is there for. if i didnt buy it, i wont pay for it!

didn't you just buy a shady program from a random developer where the only credentials provided are an online forum, a nickname, and a paypal address?

i've offered the CVV2 code to merchants before.
