"ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—An animal rights group wants the PGA Tour to take action against player Tripp Isenhour, facing charges for hitting a hawk with a golf shot because it was making noise as he videotaped a TV show."

Quote :
"Isenhour was charged Wednesday with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines."

Quote :
"The 39-year-old player, whose real name is John Henry Isenhour III, became angry while filming “Shoot Like A Pro” on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club—his home course—when a squawking red-shouldered hawk forced another take."

Quote :
"He got in his golf cart and drove closer to the bird, then 300 yards away, and starting hitting balls at it. The bird didn’t move and Isenhour gave up and drove away.
Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.
Isenhour allegedly said, “I’ll get him now,” and aimed for the hawk.
“About the sixth ball came very near the bird’s head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close,” Baine wrote.
A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils."

I'd be happy to see this bastard in a federal "Pound you in the ass" prison but this sick fuck will likely have the charges dropped. "Un-fucking-believable"

The 1500 in fines is nothing to him. They guy is a giant douche though trying to kill a bird because it made him do another take.

I do think though the PGA should take action against him, because it just makes all golfers look bad.

Let the head of PETA get a five or six televised whacks at him with the golf club.

That'd be justice.

Look, had Pinchy McGolfswing hit the hawk on a shot gone astray or while it was flying I would have said a prayer for the bird and let it be. But instead this asshat maliciously tracked down and murdered this creature merely because it was bothering him. Is there not something inherently disturbing about that kind of behavior?

Yeah 1500 dollars isn't shit, and you know he isn't going to jail. He will probably be punished more by the PGA along with heafty donations he will have to make now to endangered birds.

Random question why did the bird not move his ass after a ton of tries.

jesus christ, get some perspective dude.

you do realize that here, in North Carolina, nay, in this very town, people load up their trucks with guns and bows every weekend and go out and kill all sorts of animals for fun, right?

You do realize that golf is not in any sort of way related to hunting, right?

You do realize the animal he killed was protected, right?

if you want to kill a bird (which I, personally, don't want to - i've never been hunting and don't ever plan to), if you do it with a golf ball or a bullet, the end result is the same.

Furthermore, did he or anyone think he actually had a chance of hitting this bird in the head with a golf ball from 75yds with only 7 or 8 shots? Jesus - give this man an award! That's a nice drive!

as far as it being protected, you have to look at the intent. Did he know it was protected? Would he have acted the same if he knew it was?

bottom line is this: the guy sounds like a jerk anyway. you really would have to be to try to kill any animal because it's bothering you during a TV shoot. What he did was wrong, yes. But seriously - get some perspective, people. Give him a fine or whatever. But putting him in pound-me-in-the-ass prison? come on

Lighten up people ... its a bird.

Who would really think that hitting a bird from 75 yards away would actually kill the animal ...

At best I would hope to hit it in the rear and scare it off ... which is what he was probably trying to do.

Its not like he took his club to it and teed off on his beak or something.

fyi thats not a drive (those tend to go 300yds+ for those guys), but still a tough shot

the guy is obviously an asshole, and deserves to be punished...financially plus community service.
it'd be funny if he had to do it with one of these bird protection non-profits...haha that would be funny/uncomfortable. in fact thats a great idea for a tv show, show asshats like him having to do community service with people they hate and who hate him.

but prison?? come on now.

Guy gets annoyed with a bird making noise. Guy kills bird.
People want guy dead or raped because they are annoyed that he killed a bird.

A. HockeyRoman is coming off as some kind of fucking psychopath...put somebody in pound me in the ass prison because they killed a bird? Get your fucking head out of your ass and get your priorities straight

B. What a dumb bird, no wonder its protected. Wouldn't you exect it to fly off when the sixth ball came "very near the bird's head"?

C. It was an impressive shot. I don't really play golf, but hitting a target that size from 75 yards is pretty damn impressive

D. It would've been a lot more ironic if the 'birdie' was an 'eagle' or 'albatross'

E. Sports Talk?

I love mock moral outrage.

The guy is not being punished for killing a bird. He's being punished for killing a protected bird. If he had killed a loud rooster, nothing would have happened.

What's the moral difference between killing a bird because it's annoying and killing a bird because it tastes good? None I can see. Neither are "necessary" (you won't die if you don't eat chicken, and it wouldn't kill him to live with the bird squaking). They are both cases of killing defenseless creatures for the sole purpose of marginally improving your day.

Now that isn't to say I support the golfer. He sounds like a prick who should get his ass beat. But it just grinds my gears when people say shit with a totally lack of regard for philosophical consistancy. For example, GrumpyGOP sure as fuck has eaten a fried chicken a couple times in his life.

Ditch the hair shirts and moral indignation people.

you just contradicted yourself. he hasn't eaten Baked California Condor, or a Bald Eagle Salad Sandwich.

whats illegal is killing an endangered and protected raptor. whats immoral is doing it for "fun"

the guy should be punished to the extent of the law.

^ That isn't a contradiction, that's you missing the point. Are you saying the act would have been morally justified if he had eaten the bird? I don't see how. When you go to KFC it isn't because you can't eat fresh vegitables, it's because you have "fun" feasting on the dead flesh of birds. IOW: if you eat fried chicken or any other meat, you support their killing for no other purpose than it brings you pleasure.

You are not innocent, Joe.

come on, man. youre not that dense are you? or do you think I am?

no one is suggesting that its okay to eat a fucking endangered species.

and there's nothing necessarily immoral about eating animals for sustenance, no matter how you define "sustenance". vegans can rant and rave all they want, but human beings are omnivores. we are built to eat flesh, although not required. in any event, it takes far more effort and cost in our society to maintain a healthy lifestyle on a vegetarian or vegan diet.

the immorality of eating meat is a matter of opinion.

the immorality of killing for pleasure is far more clear.

the ILLEGALITY of killing an endangered species is abundantly clear.

^ But you are still missing the point. If you have ever eaten an animal because it tasted good (don't lie), then you have directly supported the killing of living creatures for pleasure. PERIOD.

If you want to condemn this golfer, you will have to come up with a different argument that excludes yourself.

Of course, I doubt you care that much. You will probably impotently insist that killing an animal for fun is different when you're eating it. Eventually you'll give up trying to think of a moral solution and just live your life like before. That's why I called this mock outrage. If anyone actually gave a shit about animals, they would their lives differently. But they don't. *shrug*

sorry, Socks``. i dont buy into your convoluted vegetarian logic.

people eat to survive. not for "fun". i eat because i'm hungry.

when i make a choice to eat chicken, it's because it is nutritious, affordable, and satisfies my physical hunger.

i also have reason to believe the chicken i eat is bred, raised, and eventually slaughtered in a humane fashion. to that end, i try to buy cage free organic chicken when possible. for the record, I never eat at KFC.

but that doesnt make me more moral than people who eat at KFC, or who buy generic supermarket chicken.

its just the choice that I make for my own reasons.

and youre not more moral than me or other meat-eaters, because you're in here whining about how we should all be vegetarian.

i've been trying to find information on this particular bird, the red-shouldered hawk, and as far as I can tell, it is not endangered. It is "protected as a migratory bird", which from what I can find simply means that since it's migratory (unlike turkeys or quail or other game-bird) it is thereby protected from hunting and killing. It does not necessarily mean that the numbers are dwindling and Isenhour has killed off one of a few remaining breeding birds or something.

So once again people - grow the fuck up and get some perspective.

of course not

i like meat. i like the taste of it. but i don't believe it is immoral to eat meat, because it sustains us.

if you think it is, then that's your opinion.

the fact is, human beings evolved to eat meat. its what we do. we have the teeth and eyes of omnivore/hunters and we have the digestive tract to process meat. its natural.

the cost (in time and/or money) to maintain a healthy vegetarian diet over the long term, is probably twice that of a non-vegetarian diet.. I'm not a fucking farmer, and those whole foods markets are expensive as hell. try maintaining balanced diet, with sufficient protien, of vegetarian-only foods. week to week, month to month.
