Played Agricola for the first time tonight. I really liked it. Only negative is the sheer number of pieces you have to clean up at the end.

Played Lords of Waterdeep. I like its a gateway game like Catan into Eurogames except for worker placement. Place dudes, collect color cubes, turn in Quest/VP cards, and get Intrigue cards (Catan cards).

Downside is Dungeons and Dragons is stamped on the board and some people did not get over that.

Dunno how you play BSG online.. I really like the witch-hunts offline when all the players are borderline sociopaths and sometimes lie as a human to cover up when they have to lie.

Love letter is fun. 10 minute game good for that one fucker who's always 45 minutes late.

Any of you play Through the Ages? I played the Simple Game (wasn't even a game just like a 2 hour mechanics lesson) This guy did an instructional podcast. I've never wanted to punch someone in the face so much in my life.

My wife and I introduced her family to ticket to ride a while back and we ended up getting a little burned out on it cause her sister loved it and requested it so much. We just showed them settlers of catan this past weekend but the game took so long we'll be overplaying it. Everyone seemed to enjoy it though.

A rundown of my recent purchases and how they went:

Dungeon Fighter is a dungeon crawl where you end up just throwing dice at a target...which is much harder than you'd expect. I bought it as a party game for drinking, but it'd be a good filler game or family game normally.

RoboRally is all about programming your robot through flags and screwing with other people. My group of all CSC majors enjoyed it.

--------------------

I'm thinking about trading my copy of Descent 2.0 for something a little less "complex." It isn't that the game is hard (2.0 is drastically simplified), but it just has so many little rules and pieces that it takes for-fucking-ever to get set up and play. I'm thinking about dropping it for Suburbia or Cosmic Encounter and then buying the other. Was also thinking about picking up Ticket to Ride since it is so simple compared to some of these other games.

Sounds like most of you are discovering that there is a whole world of cool board games out there now.

Through The Ages is ridiculously fun. Probably better for 3-4p, but fine with 2p.

Ends up being a complicated card game with tokens, but really fun. About 20 turns a player. Has that 'god I have to balance everything' like Agricola, but with Military interaction. You can fall behind a little on Military, but you simply get annihilated if you ignore it.

Been playing online on http://www.boardgaming-online.com/index.php?cnt=1

The interface is ugly as shit. The instruction book is on boardgamegeek, but its a little hideous. I wrote up a little (big) rulebook that interweaves a sample game. Never wrote anything up so I wanted to see how it goes!

Any good games for younger kids (late elementary, middle school) that are fun with adults? Thinking for a beach trip. Will bring Settlers, and they loved Munchkin, but looking for other suggestions as well.

played a few this weekend at game night:
1. Lords of Waterdeep
2. Galaxy Trucker
3. RoboRally

Wish we had some more time, but I can't complain. All are fairly simple and yet very fun.

I've been enjoying my zombie fluxx game this weekend, quick and simple. We are currently playing Last Night on Earth and it takes forever and each scenario is different so you never really know what you are doing.

My sister and her fiance introduced us to Small World. Dunno if it's been mentioned in here, but it's a fun strategy game.

Plays like a short version of risk, but is class based with a fantasy backdrop.

With a 6 and 9 year old, we have tried to target our games for kid friendly. Here is our list and thoughts:

Starfluxx: Good card game. Pretty easy with the "simple" rules. Even the 6 year old can play it.

Ticket to Ride: Not bad either, but holding cards and the connecting routes strategy can make it tougher for our youngest to understand. We have the 1910 expansion and Alvin & Dexter, but have not played with those, yet.

Munchkin: The kids really like Munchkin, but its still a little more than our youngest can handle. The 10 year old is pretty good at it though. Holding all of the cards and keeping track of it is just difficult for smaller hands.

Settlers of Catan Junior: Kinda simplistic for the parents but the kids really like it and can understand it quite easily. Definitely a good board game intro for younger kids. Not a huge challenge for adults though.

Small World: Kids have played it, but its a bit tough for the boys to totally follow and play competitively.

Castle Panic: Great kids game. Since its cooperative, they can help out but not feel all of the responsibility. Not having to hold your cards makes it even easier.

Castle Panic with Wizards Tower: Little more difficult, but honestly more challenging and fun for the adults. My kids love the challenge on this and have a good time when we play it.

To anyone who thinks powergrid takes forever to play it doesn't. Its really not that complicated. Its worth the 20 minutes of figuring out the rules. Don't be discouraged! Its pretty cool

Recently got to play Anomia and Wizards and they were both a lot of fun.

They're more party games though.

Wizards was a nice new take on a trick taking card game though.

Tok Tok Woodman was also a lot of fun, if you've got a hint of dexterity

[Edited on November 30, 2013 at 12:58 PM. Reason : they all take some practice though i think =/]

Finally got to play Cosmic Encounter about a week ago...wasn't great but that's because we had someone in the group that was trying to rush through to play the next game on the list. Of course he pulled the zombie alien and prolonged the game by rezzing everyone.....

I'm looking forward to trying it again.

Robinson Crusoe looked fun, but another coop game and I'd worry its too easy for an alphaplayer to take charge.

I've been on a buying spree this last year, but fortunately I've gotten to play a good number of the games I have now. I still have a few in the wrap though, harder to find people to play some game types

eh i've heard that it is certainly possible. again, my game group is fairly good about discussing options but letting folks do what they want. supposedly it has enough of an "oh crap here it comes" factor (similar to maybe the harder versions of Pandemic) that you can't ever fully plan.

i bought it partially as a solo game either way.

I went into Game Theory for the first time tonight and it was a little different than I expected. It was their board game night, so there was a ton of people setting up games at the tables. One of the workers must have noticed I was a newbie and immediately came over to help me. He and two other customers walked me through the shelves of game to find the next game to get for my wife for Christmas (we have gotten pretty crazy into Settlers of Catan).

Overall it was a great experience, and everyone there was nice (and really, really, really into board games). I didn't recognize a single board game on the shelves except a future version of Risk.

I ended up getting Small World and Carcassonne since they told me they would both be good for 2 people. I also ordered Ticket to Ride for my sister from Amazon earlier today since her and her husband have also gotten into Catan recently.

I didn't skim the whole thread, but I started playing Betrayal at the House on the Hill and have really enjoyed it. It's best suited for 4-6 players. There's a lot of replay value because you build the game board as you explore this haunted house and collect items. At some point, there is a "haunt" and phase two of the game begins. There are 50 different scenarios you can play, depending on the haunt was triggered.

Sometimes there is a traitor that turns on the rest of the group, and sometimes it's everyone against the house itself. I played about 5 rounds with my family over Thanksgiving, and each time the goals were very different.
