Quote :
"The University of North Carolina Board of Governors Friday approved a plan to educate more doctors to meet the needs of the state's growing population.

Under the plan, UNC would create new medical schools in Charlotte and Ashville, and would renovate and update other facilities over the next 10 years.

Starting in the fall of 2009, both the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University will admit more first-year medical students to feed a predicted deficit in primary care physicians."

I agree about Greensboro. Plus, we have so many health systems and hospitals in Greensboro, not to mention the near-by winston hospitals.

i was under the impression that they would only do the preclinical years at the satellite UNC locations (Ashville and Charlotte), then come back to UNC-CH for the clinical years...

With the number of hospitals here and with the school's science background. I always expected that NC State would eventually add a med school.

Guess not.

those, imo, are the two best places for medical schools... if im wrong correct me... but dont the medical schools do the cutting edge and most advanced medical work... and if so... adding a med school in the western part of the state and in the state's top city only make NC that much more attractive for doctors and medicine and such

if state added a med school the triangle would have 3, don't think that's quite needed

I understand the one in Charlotte but what's up with the one in Asheville?

It's not like those with medical degrees don't already want to practice there.

Greensboro would have been the better choice.

It's not going to be affiliated with UNCC.

"UNC Chapel Hill would increase the size of its first-year class from 160 students currently to 230, ECU from 73 to 120 [...] the plan by the two medical schools is to open satellite campuses for third- and fourth-year medical students. UNC Chapel Hill would put one in Charlotte at the Carolinas Medical Center and another in Asheville at a not-yet-announced hospital. ECU would open one, maybe two, satellite campuses in the East."

the truth comes out--should've expected wral to get it twisted

that seems like a rather convoluted scheme...

I highly disagree. Elon is an amazing school, def beats most public schools.

Dnl, I guess you were asking why don't they put a medical school there? It's because Elon is private so the UNC board of governors don't really have much say.

^^ agreed. elon is way way way better than uncg. elon's mba program is like #2 in the south or something (in some ranking) and is ranked nationally. its only a few years old, too.

plus the freshman class profile @ elon looked impressive---i couldn't even find one on the uncg website. no offense to uncg. when i visited that school back in the day, i was NOT impressed. i'm sure its gotten better though. it has a great nursing program and a great music program. as far as med schools it would seem like uncg would be an appropriate choice esp bc of the emphasis on nursing. who knowsss.

this isn't necessarily true. professional school admission is so competitive with a large number of applicants for a tiny number of spaces. i'm sure there are plenty of people that meet the qualifications that didn't get in on the first try. plus how many times have you asked your doctor for their class rank or mcat score? there are just too many variables to make such a general statement about people attending a new school being less qualified than those who got into unc/ecu.

The location of the professional schools in the UNC system is dictated by geography primarily. Therefore, State will never have a law school or a medical school despite its science focus. The UNC Board of Governors tries to provide a well-rounded education to all people of the state as close to their homes as possible.

State run medical schools will now be at UNC, ECU, UNC-C, and UNC-A. Law schools are at UNC and NC Central. Veterinary school is at NCSU. MBA Programs are most everywhere because of their current popularity.

Yeah the quality of student wont go down, so you don't have to worry about someone fucking up your heart surgery, but the quality of person will go down, so that same person who did a great job on your heart surgery will be a complete asshole.

But to the Lawyer comment, there are about 100 lawyers that graduate every year for every 1 medical student. There is also a shortage of doctors in the States. Probably because the lawyers are suing everyone into the ground and its not worth the risk to practice medicine anymore for a lot of people. Not saying docs shouldn't be held accountable, but ALL docs are paying for the well publicized mistakes of a few.

typically the students applying for those spots are academicaly well qualified (meaning have similar grades and mcat scores) so the admission criteria relies heavly upon other factors like volenteer work, ect to choose students. Many good, well qualified students dont get accepted and i dont believe that opening the number of seats will compromise admissions because the number of applicants still overwelmingly ounumbers those that are accepted
