My 360's dvd drive is dead and the damn this is 2 months out of warranty. The new drives look to range between $50 and $80 online, and microsoft wanted a min of $100 to fix it, plus shipping. I don't think the hd-dvd drive will play games, but if so, then its the cheapest option now.

It looks like there are two options:

Buy a new/used drive, then ->
1. read the old drives key and flash the new drive's chip with it
2. swap the internal pcb board between the drives...

Anyone done this or have and suggestions?

wrap the xbox in a towel and let it run until it overheats and gets the RRoD. If your console is < 3 years old, free fix.

Just for reference, I picked up a drive from echostore.com, and after swapping out the pcb board in the drive with the one from mine, it runs great. Cost to fix was $60.

not really. If you send it in for a RRoD fix and there's clearly something else wrong with it, they're still gonna charge you to fix it.
