I thought most movies were around 2 hours long... what happened to that? I was looking at movie times today, and they are mostly all 1:30 running time, and i'm sure that includes the credits.

it's just not worth spending close to $10 a ticket for that shit

i dont really consider it something that just started, but i do often look at movie times as an indicator of whether a movie will be good or not...has to at least be 110 minutes for me

I really don't think it's changed much, if at all.

It all depends on the move. Comedies are usually around 1.5, drama and action usually around 2, and then you got your "epic" movies that can go 3 hours.

I remember reading an article about 7 or 8 years ago that was basically along the lines of "Since when are movies 2+ hours long?" It talked about how just over 90 minutes was the standard for years and that recently they'd gotten longer. Maybe now it's starting to shrink back towards that in movie-making trends.

^I remember something like that.

I don't think there should a "required length" for movies. Obviously ~90 minutes should be a minimum, but that's the only requirement I'd place on them. It should be long enough to effectively convey the story, no more, no less.

If a movie is more than 2 hours, they should add intermissions. I always get the super sized soft drink.

perfect example is Pursuit of Happyness

great movie, but there was at least 30 minutes near the end where it really started to drag and i feel like they were just trying to make the movie longer

heat is 3 hours long and its probably the only "long" movie that actually should be about 3 hours...the whole story fits...there are no scenes where you go "why the fuck is this in the movie"

I really like long movies, just as long as it is worth it. I guess I'm just a fan of "epic" movies.

agreed. I couldn't imagine movies like Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, Assassination of Jesse James, etc. if they were only 2 hours.

being a fan of a certain movie length seems pretty stupid to me. movies should be as long as they have to be. whether it takes an 90 minutes or 180.

Transformers would have been infinitely better if they had cut out the whole part where they went back to his house to get the glasses and just made it 30 minutes shorter.

^hell yeah that part with all of them trying to hide was stupid as hell

I hate movies that are hella long unless they're really really good

Basically a sliding scale for movie length vs movie quality

I can sit through 2.5 hours of a great movie, but at the 90 minute mark of a shitty movie I'm ready to bounce

Plus my bladder is small and I always have to piss like 3 times so I end up missing something important

i like to know how long movies are usually before i go see them in the theatre.

I remember seeing a sneek preview of 40yr old virgin and, although i thought it was hilarious, kept wondering when the fuck it was going to end and why it was so long.

I'm a fan of movies in general so i dont really care about lengths. 3 hours of forrest gump or 90 minutes of passenger 57, doesn't really matter to me as long as its good (P57 is good to me )

thats why you don't go see shitty movies in the first place

although i did go see Beloved so i'm not the greatest authority on that strategery

but yeah i've noticed the shorter movie lengths too...and i generally avoid the shorter ones whenever possible. obviously it works for some comedies, but for movies where character development is even the least bit important (superbad included, transformers not imo) i prefer for the length to be longer than 90 minutes.

So that when they release the movie on DVD, they can have "COMPLETELY UNRATED ADDED MATERIAL, ONLY ON DVD! AND 6 ALTERNATE ENDINGS!!"

which brings up the play time to probably about 1hr 45 or 2 hr
