"The junior was honored as national player of the year by Sporting News on Tuesday, ensuring he will become just the eighth Tar Heel to have his number retired. When he leaves school, Hansbrough will join a list that includes Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Phil Ford on the distinguished front row of jerseys hanging from the Smith Center rafters."

They should have waited till he left school to tell him

Now he can play like shit for the rest of this year and next and they can't take it away

Its like telling a kid what you got him for Christmas on December 3rd

If he stays, barring injury, it's a near certainty that he will become the ACC all-time leading scorer, surpassing Redick...

in order to be a 'bust" people have to expect you to be good in the nba. nobody thinks he has the athleticism

another great college player

still though with as many calls as he gets (and trips to the line) its not a huge surprise...lots of players, if they stayed 4 years, could potentially beat that record...its all about being able to start for 4 years and get quality stats your first year to build on...and of course being a good player and not getting injured

i think there's a specific requirement to get your jersey retired. Hansbrough has achieved it by winning TSN POY, so his number is automatically retired.

At Duke, UNC, and NC State... a player has to get National Player of the Year.

(Well, we're not sure yet at State. I think that's an unwritten law... but it will probably be that way, and DT was)

Up until this point, I thought that was AP Player of the year...guess not.

Not sure that's a requirement at Wake. Did Duncan ever win POY?

Retirement for TSN POY is gay.

If he wins AP, which he probably will, then retire it.

This is like hanging a banner for a helms national championship.

Why do so many of you care what UNC does as far as retiring their players jersey? If they want to retire it, then great, let them.

nobody told him anything, sports illustrated is making an assumption (which is obviously a good one). this thread should be titled something about beaker being named player of the year, not that some writer speculated about his jersey being retired.

on another note, why have a "player of the year" before conference/ncaa tournaments happen?

the recognized NPOY awards for retirement are: the Oscar Robertson Trophy (selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association of America), the National Association of Basketball Coaches; the Associated Press; The Sporting News; the Naismith Award (presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club); and the John R. Wooden Award (presented by the Los Angeles Athletic Club).
