My parent's house is a waypoint for the planes at Cherry Point to get on final approach. We constantly have low flying harriers, prowlers, and C-130s over the house. If the Blue Angels are in town, they're flying over it too. 3/11/2008 10:40:37 PM |

i'm a goldsboro native. seymour johnson air force base is there for those who don't know. we got so used to teachers stopping for 15 seconds or so when planes flew over and then resuming that we hardly took notice. we got a new student in 3rd grade. it was monday and she had just moved to goldsboro that weekend. she fucking freaked when a plane flew over on her first day. thought it was a tornado or something. the rest of the class was all "wtf mate?" 3/11/2008 11:19:14 PM |

man this shit is so disturbing. these airplanes seem like they're really low. definitely low/close enough that you can hear them coming and going, and when they're overhead you can feel the house shake. but it takes about 15 minutes to drive to the airport from here, i don't get why they fly so low.
i was thinking maybe there was another airport that i dont know about.. but even if there were a small airport nearby, i lived less than a mile from a small one near fuquay and those tiny planes hardly make any noise.
these are either military or passenger planes. no way its one of those tiny little planes that people do stunts with at the small airports. whatever they are, i'd love to know why they fly so fucking low. it scares the hell out of me cause it makes no sense. every time one passes, i feel like something is about to crash into my house. no way they fly that low all the way to PTI.
are there other airports in greensboro? or a top secret area 51? ANYTHING TO MAKE SENSE OF THE AIRPLANES!!!1 ttyl thx ok l8r 3/12/2008 12:24:44 AM |

not that i know of.
i feel like the planes that i keep hearing are possibly some kind of military aircraft. because of how low they fly... and because they don't come over nearly as much as commercial planes would. but i'm far enough from the airport that i guess every plane wouldnt come by. but why fly so damn low for so long? seems like they'd wreck before they could land. ahhhhh
you can hear/feel it coming for maybe 5 seconds or something before it gets overhead, and then you can hear it fading back out for another 5 seconds. (i haven't timed it, just seems like its pretty long. in other words)
seems like the same thing happened last year about this time.3/12/2008 6:34:43 AM |

im thinking this new plane traffic is from skybus, but it still doesnt all make sense (read if you care)
i was actually home during the day for a while today, and i heard one and went outside to look for it... and it was a skybus. skybus is always advertising new destinations and stuff, so maybe there are new flight paths opening up that take the planes in places they didnt go before
like i also saw a kinda low plane going overhead today while driving near my house. it was flying from south to north. and i just checked to see how far PTI is from here. according to google maps, its an 8 mile drive. 7 miles as the crow flies. and its exactly due west (270) from here.
so i think the one i saw today had to come out of the airport, go southeast, then gradually turn back to the north. it definitely couldnt be on its way to land
to people who know: how far out is 7 miles, in terms of airplanes and how high/low they should be? at what distance do you start the landing process? and how long would you stay at low altitude once taking off? 3/18/2008 9:53:24 PM |

At about 7 NM out the planes will be only about 2000-3000 feet AGL on a standard 3 degree glideslope. They can tend to be pretty loud from that low.
And as for planes departing, I did some research on KGSO out of sheer boredom/vague interest and the Baynes Two Departure looks to go right over the area you mentioned. That could be your answer.

cool, thanks for looking that up. couple questions:
i dont know how to convert this shit.... can you help me with that part?
http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0802/00178BAYNES.PDF
it says it goes at 80 degrees to one spot (36° 8.06N, 79° 29.87W), then turns and heads at 41 degrees toward south boston
does 36° 8.06N, 79° 29.87W convert to 36° 8.06', -79° 29.87'
and what is the baynes 2 departure? i mean i see what it is, but how much is it used, and why would it be used?
it makes sense though if i have the right coordinate, cause the line from the airport to there goes almost exactly over my house. it says that the baynes 2 just changed recently too. but i dont know what it is!] 3/18/2008 11:45:16 PM |
theDuke866 All American 52807 Posts user info edit post |
Baynes 2, without looking at it, sounds like a SID (Standard Instrument Departure)
it's just what the name implies--when taking off, aircraft will often be cleared for a SID (and the pilots will have all of this stuff in their navigation and approach charts)
it allows air traffic to be routed in a way that deconflicts with noise sensitive areas, landing approaches, etc, and it is a standard thing (instead of saying "upon takeoff, fly runway heading up to 2000', then climbing right turn to 130, leveling at 4000' until 5 miles, then climbing left turn to 060 up to 8000'. They can just say "Cleared to Chicago via Baynes 2 then flight planned route", and everyone will know what to do without having to copy it down (and often read it back over the radio).
SIDs are generally only used at large, busy airports. It's basically just a way of organizing air traffic to something manageable, and it's nice for convenience and brevity in terms of them telling you what to do.

ok i think i have it figured out. and if they go on a straight line flight path at 80 degrees and head for the first turn, then that line really does go right over my house. and they actually follow that line when they fly over.
thats wild. so however high they would be in about 6-7 miles is i guess still low enough to hear. 3/19/2008 12:17:50 AM |

yes
and i doubt they're at 500'. they're prob at several thousand feet.
also, i used to live on the final approach course for runway 7 at NAS Pensacola (the home of the Blue Angels). they used to come through my backyard LOW and HAULING ASS on a very regular basis. there are a couple of pics in my photo gallery (in the "more military stuff" folder)
^i can't find that SID. if you post it, I can likely tell you about how high they are at a given point.
