Old? Don't care. This topic needs a new thread every day until he finally fades away in the NBA.

"Enough with Hansbrough infatuation
By Rick Morrissey - Chicago Tribune

The NCAA tournament soon will be upon us. It normally is a highlight of the year for me.

Great teams abound. Upsets lurk. Unlikely stories present themselves. Tournament pools overflow. What's there not to like?

Well, now that you asked, North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough would be at the top of my "not-to-like" list. And right now, it's a list of one.

I don't know Hansbrough. He could be the nicest kid in the world, for all I know. He could be the kind of kid who helps old ladies in Duke jerseys across the street.

But if you want to talk about overexposure, you start with Hansbrough, who is on TV so much that, by comparison, Paris Hilton has an air of mystery to her.

It's not his fault. He fascinates the networks in a way no 22-year-old college basketball player should. He makes the most of his considerable ability, which is why Sports Illustrated made him its national player of the year. He will be an average player in the NBA, but that's really beside the point.

You would think he's Michael Jordan by the way the analysts yammer on about his "intensity," a word that apparently is surgically attached to Hansbrough and no one else. The lowlight came last year when ESPN announcer Bill Raftery uttered these words while the camera was trained on Hansbrough during a timeout: "Watching Tyler Hansbrough listen is special!"

Yes, watching Hansbrough intensely listen to his coach makes for thrilling television. In fact, I thought he got robbed in the Best Actor-Drama category in the 2007 Emmys.

College basketball announcers seem bewitched by Hansbrough's wide-eyed look on the court, and only further scientific study will tell us whether those eyes have gotten wider since he started realizing they were the focus of so much attention. As it stands, his eyes are bigger than Fat Albert's stomach.

Apparently no one else in college basketball hustles the way Hansbrough does. Other players dive for loose balls, but when Hansbrough does it, you would think he were diving on a grenade to save the lives of his teammates the way the TV announcers describe it.

There is something vaguely unsettling about all this. When was the last time you heard a broadcaster talk about the work ethic and intensity of a black player? Maybe that's overanalyzing things, but when you see other kids busting their butts on the court and getting no recognition for it, you try to understand why.

All I know is that, provided North Carolina keeps winning - and even then it might not make a difference - CBS will have wall-to-wall coverage of Hansbrough. The last person to get this much attention for his eyes was Superman, and it was for his extraordinary vision. I think I just gave CBS another story idea: Tyler Hansbrough, superhero. Where does a network go to get a cape?

There's a lot to like about Hansbrough. He does play hard. He's fearless inside. He throws up some shots only a mother could love, but more often than not, they go in. (Speaking of Hansbrough's mother, we will be seeing his parents over and over again during tournament coverage too.)

When TV gets its teeth into a subject, it has a tendency to not let go. The lockjaw approach is the only thing it knows. For all the times I've seen Hansbrough on television this year, the only things I know about him are A) he's a maniac on the court and B) he's really good.

There's nothing else they can come up with? Nothing beyond the crazed look on his face?

When Duke's Gerald Henderson broke Hansbrough's nose with his elbow last season, you couldn't help but wonder whether that was for all the college basketball players who were sick of the gushing over the North Carolina forward. Henderson was suspended for a game. You also couldn't help but wonder if the networks at least might have taken a moment to consider whether they had played a role in the bloodletting.

And it came to you almost immediately: Nah.

His nickname is Psycho-T for the way he works in practice and in games. He should be applauded for the way he plays, for the effort he gives, for the adrenaline he brings to the court. So why don't I feel like applauding? After all, it's not his fault ESPN covers his tenacity the way C-SPAN covers Congress.

During the years, people have tried to introduce TV folks to the concept of less being more but have received blank looks in return.

So brace yourself for a month of the one-dimensional Tyler Hansbrough, and brace yourself for the monopoly on hustle that CBS will hand him. Of course, you won't have to brace for anything if you turn down the volume."

My sister has a picture of him (I won't post it, but TWW might be able to find it) where she's giving the wolf with her fingers, and he got pissed. So he's a fag and an asshole most likely.

My friend at UNC has a class with him. He said he spends the whole time looking up his stats on ESPN. That's when he actually goes to class. He's also failing that class. But somehow that will be overlooked.

Hansbrough should be NPOY over Beasley. Their numbers are similar and I give the award to the guy who has helped lead his team to a 30-2 record. No one is saying Beasley isn't a FAR, FAR better NBA prospect, because that would be ridiculous. But the award is NPOY in college... and that is Hansbrough.

As far as the media infatuation... it's about the same that Redick/Morisson got. Do you guys not remember Mike Patrick et al every time JJ was on the court. I really think Patrick soiled his pants a few times doing Duke games during the Redick years.

I can tell you one thing... I would give my left nut to have a guy like Hansbrough play for State...

*** As far as Singler vs Hickson. Singler absolutely deserved FOY no matter what teams each played on. Singler has a high basketball IQ, values the ball and had very good numbers. Hickson is a great talent but Singler was more efficient...

did Branden Wright deserve FOY last year over Costner?

Beasley is 3rd in the nation in scoring and 1st in the nation in rebounding...Hansbrough isn't top 5 in either of those categories...I could care less about who led their team to better record...Beasley is hands down the best player in college basketball this year and therefore deserves the award for player of the year...Texas finished 25-10 last year (Kansas State is 20-10 right now btw)...Durant still deserved POY

maybe you havent watched enough Kansas State, I dunno

As far as Wright vs Costner... I think it was close. I would have liked to see BC get it but I had no problems with Wright winning it... I think the fact that Costner was a second year player factored a bit into it, even though it shouldnt have.

As far as Hansbrough v. Beasley.

Beasley: 26.5 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 1/2.4 A/TO, 53.7 FG%
Hansbrough: 23.1 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 1/2.3 A/TO, 54.3 FG%

They have similar numbers. UNC has had a better year and that plays into it a lot imo... i don't care if you want to agree with me or not. Most of the experts around the country do...

they definitely have similar stat lines

i just dont know how anybody could watch beasley play a few games and not realize he's easily the best player in the country

and fuck your "experts"...most people have them at 1a and 1b...you're acting like hansbrough is going to win in some kind of landslide...my ass

if hansbrough wins its because they award it to the best player on (one of the) best team(s)...not the best player period

this was from an espn article on Hansbrough/Beasely

HUBERT DAVIS: Tyler Hansbrough is the only player in the country who plays hard all the time, on both ends of the floor and on every possession in games, practice, shootarounds and pickup ball.

one of the dumbest things i've ever read. does he REALLY think hansbrough is the ONLY player in the country who plays hard all the time? i mean, i realize Hubert Davis is a homer, but that's a pretty retarded statement

If Hansblow gets NPOY it will only be because UNC went farther in the NCAAT and because UNC has a better record. However, if you analyze the argument further, things look a little different.

1. Beasley beats Hansblow in almost every category, with the exceptions being steals (1.3/game v. 1.5/game), fg% (53.7 v. 54.3), and ft% (77 v. 81.3). Even the exceptions, Beasley is close to beating him.

2. Not to mention a significant portion of Hansblow's points comes from FT (~37%), he has the most FT attempts in the nation (321 taken, 261 made, 60 missed). Beasley has 256 taken, 197 made, 59 missed. Meaning that Hansblow is getting arguably easier baskets than Beasley.

3. Arguably, the Big 12 is a better basketball conference this year, than the ACC. K.State has to play Kansas (ranked top 5), Texas (ranked top 10). UNC only has to play Duke (top 5/10). The Big 12 has probably 6 teams that will make the NCAAT (KU, UT, KSt, Baylor, Ok, TxA&M). The ACC only has 4, maybe 5 teams that will make the NCAAT (UNC, Duke, Clemson, VT, UM). Therefore, Beasley has arguably harder competition than Hansblow has.

4. Hansblow has a team full of Burger Boys that compliment and help him. Beasley doesn't have such players around him. However, this argument could go either way: (a) Hansblow is that good because he can get the stats he does with those kind of players around him; Beasley can get those stats because he is the obvious best player on the team. (b) Hansblow has such great players around him that help him; Beasley doesn't have those great players to help him.

Conclusion: Statistically Beasley should win hands down. However, since UNC will likely go farther in the NCAAT, Hansblow could win because of that. Even though Beasley, IMO, has much more talent than Hansblow has. Hansblow is good, but not the best player in the nation.
