or saw a Michael Jackson music video until today, when I told as much to some friends and they became disgusted with me.

They proceeded to make me sit and watch about twenty minutes of an androgenous freakshow prancing about.

They are no longer my friends.

I was born in 1985. My memory of the period is a bit hazy, especially when it comes to all the shitty music.

I'm confused as to how some people can so gladly talk shit about pop music but still think this douchenozzle is cool.

MJ pre-hair-catching on fire was DA BOMB! Erryone loved some MJ back then.

Once he got burnt up... And the stories about his behavior and plastic surgeries came out. The weirder that dude became. If he would've died during that pepsi commercial.. MJ would be in Elvis atmosphere... But now he's just a sad sad case of humanity.

Do you watch things like The Simpsons/Family Guy/other shows with pop culture references?

I'm sure he's slipped in there without you knowing

You definitely heard Thriller.

Ronald Reagan personally hired Panamanians to execute everyone who hadn't heard that song by midnight New Year's Eve 1989.

It's like the IQ test you took before grade school. You took it, but don't remember.

Otherwise, you'd be dead.

Them Panamanians didn't fuck around.

I may have heard references, even recreations of the songs -- but never the songs themselves, no.

It's not just that he's weird -- really, it isn't. Weird I can deal with. But I know shitty music when I hear it. Maybe it wasn't considered shitty in the 80's when everybody had shitty taste, but I know garbage when I hear it.

Honestly I was more looking for support than I was conflict, but apparently I'm one of the very few that know the difference between pop bullshit and actual classic music.

Britney Spears had (has?) a ridiculous fanbase, that doesn't mean she's anything but a fountain of OMFGARBAGE.

Pretty much nobody remembers Britney's hits even now, like 5 years later.

Everyone knows Michael Jackson's music.

What do you think it is that makes music "classic" anyway?

Because I was under the impression that it was broad appeal and the ability to stay popular for a long time. You don't have to like something for it to be a classic, hell I think half of the stuff the Beatles put out was complete shit, but it's still classic.

I dunno, I always assumed that some degree of being "good" was necessary, maybe I was wrong. Fine, he's classic. He also sucks with the force of ten thousand hoovers.

I call bullshit. I do not care how young you are or what hole that you have lived in. It's possible that you may have missed the airplay that "Scream" got when it came out in '95, but there is no way in hell that you missed "You Rock My World" in '02. They played the hell out of the video on MTV etc because it was the first thing that he'd come out with in forever.

How do you figure? I don't watch MTV and I don't listen to shitty radio stations. Seems like it should be pretty easy to miss it under those circumstances.

MJ put out tons of hits. At some point you heard one, whether you knew it or not. It could've been a restaurant, a department store, a bar, riding in someone's car who does listen to "shitty" music, a movie, or a TV show. You might not have been aware of it, but you heard it.
