All right, I have VideoLAN installed on my comp for watching movies.

About a month ago, VideoLAN would no longer allow me to open files and I received a message saying the file is corrupt.

So I went into Add/Remove Programs and I can't find VideoLAN listed to uninstall it, but it's not listed.

I re-download VideoLAN, it installs, I go to use it, the file is corrupt.

Again, I try uninstalling it in Add/Remove Program, but it is not listed.

So I got to the actual VideoLAN program file on my comp, but I can't access it and receive a message that says, "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable."

I run chkdsk and at the command prompt and see a shit ton of errors and receive the message, "Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode."

So I run chkdsk c:/r and receive the message "The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

I type Y, restart and nothing happens ...

WTF?

How did I fix my goddamn drive if I can't get chkdsk to run?

Boot to a Windows installer CD, but choose Recovery Console instead of Reinstall/Install ... type chkdsk ... profit.

all right, I've moved the VideoLAN file to my desktop and it is completely empty. Now my problem is deleting it. It's saying that the plugins folder is full, but it's not. I've already set my computer to show all hidden files, and there ain't shit in that folder.

So now I have my VideoLAN folder on my desktop and it won't delete ... I guess because it's corrupt. How do I kill this fucker?

Step 1: Defragment your computer
Step 2: run chkdsk /f c: (click yes to prompt on restart) reboot, it should prompt you to do a disk check Before the windows loading screen. If this doesn't work, boot into safe mode and do it again.

all right ... I can't run defrag because it says, "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (C. Please run Chkdsk /f."

But chkdsk does't seem to run when I start up my comp. Do you you think I'm missing the screen that prompt a chkdsk before the Windows loading screen? If so, how can I ensure that I catch it?

Assuming you hit Y ... what is the response?

Upon restart, it should do it automatically, only asking you to press something to cancel it.

However, if this does not work, reboot and hit F8 immediately after the bios screen, choose Safe Mode, retry the chkdsk command.

all right, I hit Y and restarted my comp. The only screen I get besides the Gateway logo is a hit F11 to run a system repair. And then the system goes to the Windows screen.

I've tried running chkdsk in Safe Mode but I get the same results ... Could Windows firewall or my AntiVirus program be causing an issue?

^^Didn't mean to step on your toes, I was just reiterating and expounding.

^In safe mode your firewall/antivirus aren't running, so no. If it's just the one file/folder hanging out on your desktop, move it somewhere where you don't have to see it again.

Then, wait for it to happen again and see what symptoms are the same. Phantom issues are rarely worth spending so many hours diagnosing. If it were my computer I might attempt it, but not over a message board unless it was something critical.

Out of extended curiosity ... what Firewall and A/V are you using?

Firewall would be the one built into Windows XP. AntiVirus is Norton Internet Security

Try uninstalling Norton completely, see if you still have this issue ... but this time do "chkdsk /x c:

Feel free to reinstall if it the problem persists.

well, I really appreciate all the advice you all gave; but I finally got frustrated and just reinstalled Windows. I backed up all my important shit, and so far so good.

I don't think I'll be installing VideoLAN again because this has happened to me twice. Something with the Plugins folders becomes corrupt, and everything else goes down hill.

Does anyone have suggestion for a movie player that will play any video file (like VideoLAN)?

Yes, I'd suggest VideoLAN is pretty much the best ... and I've no clue why you're having issues, because I've never had a problem like that before.

do you have it installed, or do you use it as a standalone player? At work I have it running standalone so there is nothing actually installed, and I've never had a problem ...

I've never used anything other than the standalone.
