Yeah, but that was the rumor before St. Anger came out, too. All the music publications and critics were slobbing Metallica's collective knob, telling us how heavy the St. Anger album was and that it was a grand return to form. Then the album sucked balls.

My biggest concern is that James' vocals on St. Anger clearly showed that his voice is going; I literally winced listening to some of it, and if they can't even fix it in the studio with ProTools, I can't imagine it being any better a few years later. That alone is going to kill the album, even if there was somehow still some thrash left in them on the guitars.

Rule #1 for all metal bands. If the marketing and hype machine sounds anything like "this is out heaviest albums since <last album we put out that was universally liked>" then you know it is going to suck.

I think the band later came back and said that they weren't the actual songs but ideas that would be going into some of the new songs. One could only hope, but in the very least it indicates what direction they've taken.

The first four albums are the best and yes St. sucked. For the new album, they have a new producer, lars is changing his snare back, and Kirk is going to play solos again. Not saying that this means it will be good but at least they are trying to go a different direction than St. Anger. I too, worry about Het's voice.

a lot of it's Rick Rubin being infinitely better than Bob Rock(IMHO the worst thing to happen to Metallica)

They have said that those would not be on the album but that some of the parts/riffs may make it into some songs. I did like the double bass and the fact that there were solos but I'm not going get too excited until I hear something official.

@Walls: I realize that taking Metallica-bashing to extremes is de rigueur right now, but that doesn't change the fact that Master of Puppets is still considered one of the best, if not the best, thrash metal album ever made. And that's among metalheads as well as the rest of the music industry.

Metallica is one of the bands that got me into metal. I'm not trying to bash them, i'm just saying that i don't think they've been capable of writing songs that can stand up to The Four Horsemen or Call of kluthu. Megadeth is the same way only with 20 ex-bandmembers and a few religions down the line. Don't get me wrong, battery is one of my favorite metallica songs.

OK the word from lars is they are 95% finished with the album (if not 100% now) and will be doing a full blown tour in the fall (USA)

the band is back and forth now in europe.
