HP - Pavilion Laptop with AMD Turion 64 X2 (TL-60), 2GB ram, 250GB HDD, DVD RW, NVIDIA GeForce 7100, integrated web cam, etc. etc.

regularly $849.00 but the machines had the Geek Squad registry optimization and software upgrades ... was told these were the only two machines left in the store, that had already been optimized and upgraded, so I would have to pay $49.00 for the extras

i told them i didnt need the optimizations because i could do that myself if i wanted it, and anyhow, i was just going to wipe Vista and everything else off the drive, and install Linux.

geek squad person protested some more... and tried to scare me with stories incompatable drivers and voided warranties ... but i wound up getting their "optimization package" for free. im sure its mostly worthless anyhow. the only thing i see that might be worthwhile is they made some restore discs for me. saved me 30 minutes of work doing it myself. woo hoo.

so then I got $150 off from it being on sale, plus $150 more off for the Qwest DSL 1 month trial offer

and Im out the door with a kick ass $899 computer for $549.00. the loss prevention guy tried to stop me too. didnt believe that i got the "extra software" for free

I don't know exactly what they do, but they run some automated program that dicks around in the registry and uninstalls some of the manufacture demos and usually runs windows update and stuff. For the average joe, it's usually worth the $50.

same thing happened to me, except the BB rep told the cashier specifically not to charge for it. Oh, and I got a free mp3 player (wish I had spotted the extra for a zune) then canceled the internet sign up on my way out of the store. It was 399 in some US markets, so I called customer service and got a 50 dollar courtesy gift card that I ebayed for 45. my best slickdeal thus far.

thing is most people can look it up on the internet , and find out how to do it ... but is it worth their time? i how how to do it and it'd probably take me at least an hr and a half to get rid of all the software and change/add things in the registry. if i made a decent wage i'd consider having it done just to not deal with, and it's definitely worth it for pretty everyone in my family , my gf ,etc. ... i'd get it done at circuit city though firedog>geek squad

i had a guy at curcuit city give me the software for free, then they tried to stop me at the front desk, then the salesman tried to say he didnt agree to that

to make a long story short, he was fired by the time i left, and i got it for free

Most laptop forums will have how to do a clean install on your pc. i did on mine and my idle ram use went from 33% to 21% (running vista full blown vista with none of the graphics etc. turned off and a few of the gadgets running too (cpu/ram monitoring ones)

^^ lol, no shit. that's messed up/funny. i can imagine it was quite the drama.

^^^ i'd rather do it on my own just so i can make my way around and see what's what. its not like i'd do anything productive with that 1 1/2 hours anyhow, i'd just probably come here and post more retarded shit.
