I've tried AVG, Sophos, and McAfee and I can't get them to run on my machine. They all say, sorry ____ doesn't currently support Vista.

I should have specified anti-rookit. A program to detect the bot programs that the standard anti-virus doesn't pick up. I don't have any reason to suspect that my comp is part of a bot network, but I'd like to err on the safe side.

yeah, you're not allowed to do that I guess. I could swear I remember that when I was in school students could give the antivirus software to friends/family.

^ Nope. We provide it to students, faculty and staff only. If that happens to be a "family-use" computer, that's fine. If it's a friend or someone that's graduated, or a family member that you don't live with, then it's not okay.

NCSU should give free anti-virus to alums. God knows i get more requests for money now than i did when i was actually IN school.

also, since you have Vista, do you have Windows Defender running on your machine? it's pretty good at catching some things.

what are the symptoms that you're experiencing that lead you to believe that you have a rootkit?

I've found that Spybot + Spysweeper trial (with the option to sweep for rootkits turned on) get most things

If I were to still use the XP version from when I was a student, will it ever expire?

And yea, I wouldn't mind getting upgrades for free, seeing how many requests I get for money and how much I actually I donate to NCSU every year as an alum.

^ technically, you're supposed to uninstall the product once you've graduated. and no, we're not going out of our way to track that, unless it's blatant abuse.

it's not possible for us to write a contract with an antivirus vendor to provide antivirus for free to alumni, unfortunately. we have to pay per person, and that comes directly from student fees. and alumni fees never go towards general IT, so that's just not an option.
