I just checked my account online and a server at California Pizza Kitchen gave himself an extra 10$ for tip. 20% apparently wasn't enough. Good thing I have the receipt. jerk. 3/18/2008 2:57:52 PM |

Always take the customer copy. Leaving the restaurant and customer copy on the bar is begging to get overcharged. You only have yourself to blame. 3/18/2008 3:56:28 PM |

some places actually leave it at the transaction amount minus the tip while its pending. i know i've checked my statement online before and said "damn, did i forget to tip? was i that drunk?" only to find out that it was because it was pending.
Hibernian is notorious for overcharging though.

But most add more while it is pending...which people don't seem to understand. Which is why bars get about 50 calls on Mondays complaining about being overcharged during the weekend...only to see it go back to normal later that day or the next.3/18/2008 4:11:31 PM |

from working in retail...
if you're ever overcharged with a tip, just call the restaurant or, in the worst case, the credit card company. if you dispute the charge, they must have a copy of the receipt with the tip written in. of course, that has to match the amount you were charged
so technically, no, you do not have to take 1 copy for safety's sake so long as you fill in and sign both 3/18/2008 4:37:14 PM |

First, filling in and signing the second one doesn't really matter if you leave it there anyway because its going to end up in the trash whether it has something on it or not.
And shit can be written in or numbers can be changed on the one receipt that's left.
And if you were black-out drunk, then you have a tough argument to make.3/18/2008 4:44:27 PM |

nah, its been argued before
they must be able to produce an original signed receipt if the charge is protested. with that, the signature must match the persons and it cannot appear to be altered (such as having a different tip written in) 3/18/2008 4:55:32 PM |

First...I wonder how often it actually goes this far. I would think that most people who get that drunk really don't remember how much they had to drink to begin with and usually give up after the initial inquisition.
Second...have you ever worked a busy bar and seen the collection of receipts at the end of the night?? When I'm entering in tips at the end of the night, at least two or three times I have to call in the other bartenders and say "what the fuck does this say??" (not to mention receipts that get wet and/or torn) We usually err on the side of the smaller number...but sometimes you really can't tell. And the really really drunk ones don't even appear to write numbers sometimes and a black-out persons signature is a lot different from a sober ones.
I'm just saying there's a lot of gray area in there.

a) i love how when there is a transaction mishap its DEFINITELY because the server wanted a better tip. nothing else could have happened. no other errors. totally that greedy server. b) its $10 fucking dollars, unless that caused you to overdraft your account (in which case you shouldn't have been eating out to begin with) who cares. like someone else said, wait a day or two to see if it goes away. c) usually if you call the place, they'll take it off. i've had this happen before. i didn't even need the receipt. actually, the time i called was after a bar ran my credit card like 5 times for the same amount. they didn't fix it within a few days, so i just called my bank, said i'd already talk to the place, and could they please handle it. it got fixed asap. d) go work in the food service industry, spoiled tww brats, before you bitch about tipping and blah blah blah. saying that someone "chose" that career as justification for thinking you are better than them and therefore don't need to tip well, since its their own fault they are where they are, is fucked up. a lot of people work food or retail jobs as SECOND jobs, and even if they don't, fuck you for judging their lifestyle. they're still working for a living and not begging for change off the street. oh and plus, not all bad service is the fault of the waitstaff. kitchens run behind, people fuck up. and what sucks is that it gets taken out on the waitstaff. if the kitchen fucks up an order or takes too long i lose tip, while the chefs on salary don't really have to worry that much. doesn't usually directly impact them. they aren't the ones getting bitched at by customers because a chicken wing ain't fried extra crispy. 3/18/2008 5:11:15 PM |

^ Unfortunately that gray area probably could screw over a lot of establishments if everyone who got really drunk called and contested, because the burden of proof is on the restaurant. Fortunately most people don't seem to do that. 3/18/2008 5:11:23 PM |

Where do you people bank? Whenever I eat out somewhere, my account never has an "initial" withdrawal and then another one. Same thing with pumping gas, I've never seen this. It always comes out as one transaction and is never altered. 3/18/2008 5:18:20 PM |

^ well yes, but my point is that customers do not realize that it isn't ALL the waitstaffs fault. yes, there are bad waiters. but even my mom gets pissed if things take SLIGHTLY longer than expected. some waiters totally just blow it off, but when i waitressed i would try to be apologetic to my table and do everything possible to get their meal out. i'd try to get part of it comped if it was really bad/really slow. or i'd at least try to get them a free app while they were waiting. and after ALL that, i'd still get no tip or like 8%. so yes, that is why waitstaff get tipped, but sadly instead of getting tipped on their job performance, they usually get tipped on the customers overall satisfaction with the food, experience, NOISE LEVEL??? i'm sorry i'm not back their cookin the food. and if you don't like noise, don't eat in a sports bar. but don't blame me if your chair was uncomfortable or you didn't like your meal. fuck that. 3/18/2008 6:05:08 PM |

I completely agree with everything you say, I just take an small exception to your reaction...
You have no idea if it was the server's fault or not. There is one possibility that the server did it on purpose. There are, however, several possibilities that it was an accident. (1) The server hit the wrong button; (2) The manager enters tips in at the end of the shift and hit a wrong button; (3) Manager or server couldn't read the tip correctly.
Bottom line is that the problem was fixed without that much effort on your side. Something unfortunate happened, but the problem was solved with very little effort...why bitch??3/19/2008 12:21:51 PM |
