yea its unfortunate that wrestling isnt a sport that you see much of on the recreation side after HS/college. Id still wrestle now if open leagues/tournaments werent so hard to find. 3/21/2008 7:10:34 AM |

Back in the day, if people were interested in learning about a place, they would go there, walk in, and talk to somebody there. Alternatively, they would pick up the phone and call the place. 3/21/2008 10:02:50 AM |

i dont doubt that he wrestled. i just know kids from fuquay that went on to wrestle in college (on scholarship)... and they never came close to a state title. and we were 3a i think. so i'd imagine that anyone who actually pulled a state title (especially 4a) wouldnt have come to ncsu] 3/21/2008 4:19:56 PM |

wrestling in high school and being in good wrestling shape are two separate entities. We had heavyweights on our high school squad that couldn't run for 5 minutes without getting completely winded.

i dont think hes lying but i could be wrong.
and jackleg, there are very few kids who never come close to a state title and get a scholarship to wrestle in college..unless youre talking about a community college I was a 2x conference wrestler of the year, ranked most of my last 2 years, only lost 15 matches total in my soph-senior seasons(out of over 100 matches), beat several sate champions in and outside my classification and weight class and i still did not get a scholarship offer to any decent programs (sure to app and places like that but no ACC school or better).
so if that was truly the case, they were the exception and not the rule, they were lying, or they went to terrible programs.
look at the kids who wrestle even at a place like NC State. these are kids who go 50-1 or 50-0 etc in single seasons, are 2,3,4X state champions in competitive 'wrestling states'. And even they are getting passed over by the top wrestling programs and coming to good (but not top tier) wrestling programs like an ACC school. Never coming close to an NCHSAA wrestling state championship does not earn you much recruiting power.
and this was in no way meant to be bragging. this was me saying i was good (and i should have been since i started at 7 years old haha) but not good enough even for ACC schools.

^ yeah. I read jackleg's post and was like wtf. More than half of the North Carolina kids on State's roster won at least one state championship.
It may be slightly different for the bigger schools, but I know down in 2A/1A wrestling it was pretty much a given that you weren't going to get a scholarship for college wrestling unless you wipe the mat with everybody in your entire weight class for 2 or 3 years. 3/21/2008 4:39:08 PM |

I know at my high school there were a ton of wrestlers that effectively contributed jack shit for the team the year we won the state championship...so that could easily be the case. 3/21/2008 4:42:56 PM |

depends. wrestling is a sport where the difference in the top 3A/4A/1A/2A schools is very small in all honesty. i know lots of 1A/2A guys from NC who have gone on to wrestle at D1 schools, however they came from smart 1A/2A programs that scheduled a majority 3A/4A set of duals and tournaments to prove their worth.
i was in 1A/2A but we but coming into states/regionals every year, over 50% of my matches were against 3A and 4A programs because of tournaments and dual meets we scheduled. (the only 1A/2A matches we had were the conference rescheduled matches usually). now granite, we were one of the top 1A/2A programs but we consistently beat 3A/4A teams in dual matches and placed top 5 in 20+ team 3A/4A tournaments. I tech-fall'd a guy my senior year who was a returning 4A state champ for example (I was wrestling up a weightclass that night too ). Doesn't get more embarrassing than that. On the same subject there were 3A and 4A programs that would get demolished in some 1A/2A conferences
It really just depends on the coaching and scheduling of your program on how competitive you are across the board and your stock as a possible recruit.

starter, only tied for 5th in regionals though, then broke my nose the next football season so that wrestling season was, well, not as good with a mask.

I always thought wearing a mask was as good as cheating. The cross-face just isn't nearly as effective when you can't rub the guys face against his teeth
We had this guy in our conference that wore one his entire career. He also wrestled on a team known for being dirty. Like the kind of dirty where you come off the mat and your nuts hurt because they kept kneeing you/hitting you in them every chance they got. One of our guys swears one of those bastards bit him in the balls. 3/22/2008 3:11:24 PM |

i got a little pissed, realized this was tww, and knew ignorance would abound. if you want to insult me about something you probably haven't even experienced, fine; i say you should try it sometime. i can hold my own, but i know i wasn't some big champion. that mask hurt my season. i relied on my physical strength and quickness more than anything, and a good part of that knocked out pretty bad by not breathing or seeing as i normally would have, not to mention screwing up training since i had to sit out for a while after it happened, which was halloween night.
i didn't have a choice about the mask. i hated it. i'd already had my fair share of cross faces, that didn't bother me. usually they just pissed me off.

Dynamic Wrestling next to Gumby's
We have practice on tuesday and thursday from 8:30-10ish, they also run a freestyle practice on monday and wednesday i think that starts at 7:30. Its not very structured just go out to wrestle and the crowd is very inconsistent. One week theres 15 people another week its just 4. If you have any questions you can shoot me a PM or join the Dynamic Wrestling group on facebook. 3/23/2008 3:17:28 AM |

I always found it easier wrestling against guys who wore masks. It was easy to cover up their field of vision and shoot on them, and if you crossfaced them hard enough you could usually drag the mask across their broken nose. 3/23/2008 9:59:45 AM |
