Girls don't seem to realize that the first thought a guy gets when meeting a girl is whether or not he will sleep with her, and that if a guy is talking to her (unless she is like his buddy's gf or something), odds are he is at least interested on taking her out on a date.

Maintain eye contact and look for cues of interest. Learn to discern between girls looking for it and girls not looking for it, i dunno how to fully explain that process.

As an aside, he might be a lost cause, I mean, here is a girl talking on her "buddy"'s behalf and having to go to the internet to score tips on how get ass. All this talk about not flirting is misleading. Flirting is fun, it's really an artform, and if you do it well its benefits transcend many shortcomings in physical attractiveness. You do, as someone already said, have to create that sexual tension; otherwise flirting is just friendliness and will get you nowhere. That tension creates that air of excitement and desire for the unknown, and it is 99% body language. Don't get me wrong though, that pesky 1% that relies on your words can kill the whole thing for you so don't miss the opportunity think before you speak. Once you've gotten past the initial stages though and things are getting down to the wire, your balls need to kick in. Show her you are as confident as you've led her to believe and ask for a number, a date, whatever is relevant.
