why do we need solemnity and restraint now?

what happened after 250 soldiers died? what did we do for #3847? do we know his name?

what will we do for 5000? 10,000?

when did we bow our heads in solemn remembrance for the 100,000 Iraqi dead, disproportionately composed of women and children?

most importantly, when do we get back to fuckin' some motherfuckers up? why is gas almost $4.00/gallon? how the fuck am i supposed to drive to the beach in my H2 this year?

It's a long way from "almost," man. The current national unleaded averages as of 3-24-2008 at 3:05 a.m. are as follows: $3.260 (regular); $3.462 (mid); and $3.587 (premium).

Please don't exaggerate.

BTW--and I know I'll regret revealing this--I have that poster ("Tonight, we dine in hell!") over my pub table.

leave it to our resident pedant to turn a thread about dead soldiers into a nickel-and-dime trivia session.

Damn, I thought it was a somewhat humorous but not at all serious parody thread.

^^ No, actually, it's not "nickel-and-dime"--it's about seventy-five cents a gallon. And you're the one that brought up the price of gas here--I'm simply not letting you skew the numbers.

Solemnity? Please.

^ Yeah, JoeSalisbury mourns the American dead by mockingly comparing their loss to that of King Leonidas's Greeks. GG.

A serious comparison would reveal that--like the "300" Greeks--the Americans who died were part of the most powerful military force in the world, and they died fighting for something: Duty, honor, country. There is no shame in that.

You overlooked a few things:

1. The "most powerful military force in the world" is a despised occupying power (and one that's getting its sad fat ass kicked by a bunch of insurgents).

2. The soldiers who died weren't fighting for duty, honor, or any other lofty ideals. They were sent to fight for oil and empire. They're making the return trip in body bags, but that's part of the cost of imperialism.

3. There's plenty of shame in being part of this war. The only positive to come from it is that the failures of the American military have shown the rest of the world how little they have to fear from the bankrupt failure that is the USA.

gas in seattle, like many other major cities, is around $3.75. it's likely going to be $4.00 or more by summer for large portions of america. but it's a minor point, and it doesnt matter because you'll still be here telling us how cheap it is out in the "impressive economy" of Fuquay-Varina.

this war has been morally, politically, strategically bankrupt from the start. the only ones profiting are war contractor buddies of Cheney and pals, along with the rabid right-wing fundamentalist Christian fascists who want to drive the world into an apocalyptic religious conflagration to fulfill their twisted ideology based on their dominionist interpretation of The Revelation of St. John.

so i say, fuck it. lets just all go ahead and parade around in an absurd homoerotic militaristic fantasy a la King Leonidas and continue trumpet this notion that us noble Americans are somehow superior to the rest of the world, and we're going to save everyone from the evils of tyranny.

so you dont feel that we have a duty as Americans to rid the world of its bastards? is it your opinion that we should instead let people suffer at the hands of the ruthless? Bosnia, Somali, etc...?

Ive always been curious of this answer by those with your opinions on Iraq. I am certianly not arguing that Iraq has gone well or was done the right way but I think Saddam was a bastard and is better off swinging on the end of a rope and I do think we have a duty to fight for those that are less fortunate than us.

the US is always in a 'damned if you do and damned if you dont' type situation. the international community is always bitching that we do too much or not enough.

The problem is that we, alone, play judge, jury, and executioner. When one entity is the sole decider of who is guilty of wrong-doing, there will always be those who disagree.

You said Sadaam was a bastard. I agree. But there are many around the world who view Bush the same way. The only difference is that they don't have the same ability to do anything about it as we do. It's morally irresponsible to grant ourselves that much power.

yeah but there is no way to compare Bush's bastardisms to Saddam's. there is a HUGE difference. Bush isnt genociding people in his own country. Bush isnt gassing minorities. you cant argue that.

of course not.

he just lets our minorities die like dogs while stranded in a trapped city cut off by a foreseeable natural disaster

because he was too busy with photo ops related to the $ Billions per Month spent bombing and shooting brownish-hued people in the one nominally secular and westernized middle eastern country which is now being dismantled, broken and driven back into the stone age

thus setting the stage for the unchecked rise of an Islamicist Theocracy in the resulting power vacuum we created.

never mind that to fund this war we go deeper and deeper into debt with China . never mind our decaying infrastructure. never mind the loss of technical and manufacturing jobs overseas. Never mind the declining math and science ability of our school children. Never mind the impending collapse of social security. never mind that millions cant afford healthcare. never mind the collapse of our financial markets and the devaluation of the dollar.

we dont need to worry about that stuff. because we're righteous in the eyes of the Lord. Jesus will take care of us.

Now let us prey.

Actually, there is a way to compare the two.

You start by acknowledging that Saddam was the leader in Iraq and Bush in the US.

The expectations for the two positions are just a little bit different.

In other words, to claim that Bush is somehow less of a bastard than Saddam is a correct comparison.

That comparison is also offensive to the United States of America.

Or do you consider us similar to Iraq?

Duty?

*whips out Constitution*

Duty as Americans....duty as Americans...let me see...

No.

It's certainly a noble aim and desire, and when accomplished selflessly and successfully, an act worthy of celebration.

But by no means is it now or has it ever been our duty.
