My mom is thinking about putting her novel on the Internet to get some feedback and also to just spread the word and generate a small audience. I know of several free hosting sites like Geocities.com but I'd like to give her some more ideas of a "grown up" free host that won't stomp on her page with advertisments.

Any ideas out there?

Also, I am aware of subscribing to search engines, but I wasn't sure if that's the best way to go for it to turn up in Google. Are there any beginning authors websites that she could sign up for? Anything effective that the users here have experimented with, anyway?

what format is she going to put the novel in? The whole thing? in PDF? cut/pasted as text? just excerpts?

does her (future) publisher thing this is a good idea?

have you looked at blogging engines like blogger.com, wordpress.com, etc?

For very close to 50 dollars she can purchase a domain and a year of hosting with godaddy.com.

I also recommend she search google for promotional codes to apply towards godaddy.

I have an account and found a 20 percent off coupon. Nothing but a good experience.

For beginners like her, they also have a n00b webpage design program included.

I know you wanted free, but I mean, 50 bucks to publicize a book is not a lot.

for a professional look (if someone made her a slick-looking site), this is what I'd do

^ maybe if she wants to make a whole site devoted to the book, but unless she does some pretty serious SEO and advertising, nobody will ever find the site. Not to mention the cost and time and actually creating a nice site and figuring out a good way to upload and share the book

LuLu and Scribd give her an easy way to publish an entire book and they already have communities and publicity built around them
