I saw a theoretical thread about the Iraq invasion and wondered what some peoples thoughts are about the potential looming invasion of Japan in the 1940's.
Would you have nuked them? Would you have invaded them? Would you let them be and never have half the modern technology we have today b/c they were controlled by commies?
I think we did it right, saved 100k's of American and Japanese lives in the long run and enabled a society of democracy and technological advancement as we currently know it. Most Liberals and Hippies differ. I would like to know your views. 3/26/2008 10:34:51 AM |

I don't think Japan ever had solid plans for a ground invasion of the US. Certain wings of their military were even against the Pearl Harbor attack because they didn't want to involve the US in their war which had been going on for ~10 years in China/East Asia. 3/26/2008 11:42:05 AM |

It's likely they could have. They probably wouldn't have held it for more than a few months though. They also wouldn't have had much use for it either, most of their island conquests were done so they could secure supply lines or steal food from the locals to give to their troops. 3/26/2008 11:50:28 AM |

interesting
Nevertheless, leaving islands of thousands of soldiers to be slowly worn down and crushed by the Americans with the orders to commit suicide in lieu of being captured probably didn't help them.
They had more than their share of bone head leadership. We probably had a slight advantage due to that. 3/26/2008 12:02:40 PM |

Well that strategy would have probably been fine if they hadn't attacked the US and gotten us involved. It was, however, easy to just skip half of the islands and leave them isolated, which is what happened. 3/26/2008 12:08:09 PM |

No, Japanese TR porn is much higher quality (we're talking Hi-Def here) while North Korea is still struggling with Technicolor. 3/26/2008 12:40:01 PM |

Sure, but since they would have needed a force comparable to the one they began sending into the Philippines the next day... They would have had to choose between Hawaii and the Philippines as far is invading+holding went. It wouldn't have made sense to invade and hold Hawaii while leaving the Philippines in the middle of your supply lines and protected with some 10 divisions of Philippine militia and 22,000 US military personnel. Since the attack on Pearl Harbor was intended to remove the US Navy as a force capable of contesting their pacific expansion, a ground invasion of it would have been a distraction from the real objective. Yes, the idea that the attack on pearl harbor could have completely removed the US Navy as a force to worry about was highly optimistic. Even nailing the carriers wouldn't have gauranteed that- though without those carriers it would have been difficult to even construct+move assets to be used in the pacific (since we wouldn't be able to protect them.)
Anyways, there does seem to be a misconception that imperial Japan intended to invade the US-proper. Maybe in the very long term they had dreams of that, but they were principally concerned with making sure the US wouldn't challenge them in the pacific.

I would OF invaded, rounded up a great deal of their hot Japanese women and brought them back to the US in order to greatly improve the variety in the chica population. I would have pulled a page from the Romulus Rulebook on Sabine women.
To be honest our invasion of Japan began in 1854 with Commodore Matthew Perry. 3/26/2008 11:07:36 PM |
