I typically leave my computer on all the time but when I came back from class last Thursday it was off and wouldn't turn on. I tried putting my old psu back in and still nothing. no matter what I do, it just sits there, noiseless. any ideas before I take it somewhere?

I recently had this problem. It was a grounding problem with a screw connecting the motherboard to the tray.

you tried switching psus?

sure it's not the switch on the front? check it with a continuity tester.

if it's not that, then it's something with your motherboard if the psu isn't even spinning up... for it to spin up, acpi has to trigger it.

unplug power supply from mobo

short any black wire to green

see if power supply turns on. if it doesn't, buy another...if it does then you probably have larger problems

so it turns out that it is indeed a blown mobo. I was planning on just buying an identical mobo and installing it in place of the old one. if I do this, will my comp be right back to where it was before I started having problems? also, could upgrading from a 350w to 500w psu be the cause of the blown capacitors on the mobo or is that something that happens because of general wear and tear over time? I got the new 500w psu about 2 months ago.

this entire process is driving me crazy. i need to order a compatible motherboard (intel BOXD865PERLK) but it is discontinued and i can't find it anywhere. any ideas besides a new computer?

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/D865PERL/sb/CS-008965.htm
this shows other similar mobos but i can't tell if they're compatible with the rest of my computer or not.

Do you know what socket type that is? Chances are you might still be able to find a compatible motherboard (different manufacturer) if you know the socket type. Finding one that still supports DDR1 may be a challenge, though - there's only one comparable AMD one around that I still know if, and it's not that good...

Edit: nm, looks like it's mPGA478. Which means... you've got about 1 option:

all you need is a motherboard with the same chipset which is 865(springdale?). an 875 board (canterwood?) should also work just as well without needing any major tweaks to get everything working fine. brand doesn't really matter.
