i don't think Mr. Tambourine Man is even remotely beyond the scope of what Jagger could write.

Have you ever listened to the Stones beyond Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, and lots of their other big hit singles?

As you all should have guessed from my Rolling Stones Shine a Light thread, I'm a huge Stones fan. I'm just giving a direct quote from Bob Dylan himself. Dude was an arrogant dick, but he was pretty damn good too. Furthermore, I'd imagine Bob compared the two songs because they both dropped in '65. So for this discussion, given he said something like that, I think he should be pitted against the rest of the giants.

To be fair, in 1965 Bob Dylan was a figure whose fame was limited to folk song writer circles while the Stones had achieved much more mainstream success. Dylan had the freedom to explore his musical range while the Stones were limited to pop numbers that would maintain their popularity and record sales. They wouldn't really get around to flexing nuts until after 1968 when Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed were released.

I like both equally, I just feel that Dylan was being a condescending dickhole when he said that.

i like Bob Dylan, but the Stones are, like, an order of magnitude better

and neither Hot Rocks nor Forty Licks really paint the whole picture of them

Obviously, the Stones aren't Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers where you can listen to their greatest hits album and then be totally aware of the work. Too often people pigeon hole them as the anti-Beatles and leave it at that, while completely ignoring the great stuff that they had after 1968 when they really discovered their sound. This sound, of course, disappeared in the mid-80s when they started cranking out shit so that they could all make their alimony payments.

As far as Pink Floyd, what had they released prior to 1970 besides Piper at the Gates of Dawn?

I was thinking Led Zeppelin until I considered the Stones. My biggest beef with Zeppelin is that their music really turned into pop crap by the time that Presence came out. Looking back on their collection as a whole that only leaves 8 or 9 years of good music on 6 or so albums. Now they did rock, but had Bonham not died I feel like that would have turned into another Van Halen.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Who yet.

Here's a thing about the competition


It isnt just a comparison of their body of works pre 1970. The question is what is the best band to debut before 1970. Their complete body of works is in play. So Pink Floyd can use DSotM, Stones can use Exile, etc

i agree with most of the suggestions in the first post. though i don't think the beach boys should be included. they released some of my favorite albums of all time, but many of their other albums just aren't that good.

again, another individual, but no one has mentioned David Bowie. he didn't make his biggest mark until 70s. but "space oddity" came out in '69.

A Saucerful of Secrets is by far my favorite Syd Barrett album. They say it's the first fully prog-rock album. Came out in '68.

David Gilmour was a part of Dark Side of The Moon, The Animals, and The Wall. I wouldn't say he almost ruined it. Rick Wright was one of the best keyboard players of all time too. And Roger Waters was Roger Waters. That's all that needs to be said about that.
