Who do you see for what?

Whats the difference between a therapist and a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Have any of you visited them before and were they helpful or are they quacks?

Essentially one in the same, though psychologists do behavioral therapy I believe (for OCD behaviors and so forth)

It depends on your problems. You can see one for anything from easy medicine scrips to therapy...

Most psychiatrists are in bed with pharmaceutical companies and are more than willing to prescribe you shit you probably don't need.

Basically I have issues with guilt, depression, and compulsive lying. I don't know if I just need to talk to someone or if I need to be medicated.

Most therapists don't have the doctors degree to prescribe meds.

you can also sometimes get meds thru your primary care physician. you usually have to start w/ them first anyway.

if you go to State, you can just go up to the Counseling Center on the 2nd floor of Student Health...they'll hook you up with some meds pretty cheap

it's really humiliating, though, because you have to walk past everybody who's waiting for a prescription, and they all know where you're going

A therapist or psychologist cannot prescribe you meds.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who generally look for medical solutions to your problems and often believe there to be an organic medical reason for your 'mental problems.' They usually do not counsel other than what is necessary to diagnose and maintain your medication. They sometimes work in conjunction with a therapist or psychologist. A therapist tends to talk you through your problems and make real world suggestions so that you can better deal with whatever your issue happens to be.

The distinction between a therapist and a psychologist is a little hazy, but I think that it may have to do with their background and qualifications.

I'm an old hat when it comes to insomnia and anxiety, so I just go through my primary care physician or OB/GYN. If your problems are simple and organic, you may do just as well going through your doctor.

^^ In some states, they will let psychologists with a Ph.D. prescribe medicine.

primary care doctors have no business diagnosing anxiety, ADD, or any of that stuff. i think that they should be able to prescribe something if you've already been diagnosed and they have proof of that -- but i don't think people should be able to just "get" xanax and adderall and ritalin and shit from their primary doc

I somewhat agree with jackleg. I do believe that primary care physicians should be allowed to diagnose and prescribe medication for psychiatric conditions. However, this is often abused and patients who need close and 'expert' management can slip through the cracks with tragic consequences.

i see a psychiatrist once a month.. sometimes more.

find one that isn't solely a prescription writer, and one that resorts to prescriptions only after talk therapy.

I'm in like a mental panic mode lately

IDK what to do, and I have no idea if any relief is in sight, nor how to find out answers

I don't really understand what's going on

I *can* tell you that anti-depressants are bullshit

psychiatrists ehhhhhh, they don't seem to care. they don't know me, what do they care?
for real tho :3

I'm not sure why it took me this long to realize how pointless I am and how pointless everything I do is, and why it's just hitting me harder this year than it ever has

and there's no point in me making this a "cry for help" because clearly I can't be helped lol

in conclusion,

We cannot know his legendary head
with eyes like ripening fruit. And yet his torso
is still suffused with brilliance from inside,
like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low,

gleams in all its power. Otherwise
the curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor could
a smile run through the placid hips and thighs
to that dark center where procreation flared.

Otherwise this stone would seem defaced
beneath the translucent cascade of the shoulders
and would not glisten like a wild beast's fur:

would not, from all the borders of itself,
burst like a star: for here there is no place
that does not see you. You must change your life.

In a land where the bubbles do gleam,
Two dragons live out a dream.
They pop with delight,
Through day and through night,
Chasing high scores with a bright, playful scheme.

We and our deeds are not pointless.

You and I and everyone else are literally--and I am not speaking metaphorically here, I am not being poetic, I mean literally--the universe experiencing itself.

You're a configuration of matter and energy experiencing everything else, every other part of the universe around you, from a limited, subjective point of view.

Leave aside the notions of value, right & wrong, any other human concept. Whatever you do, whatever you choose to be, it's inherently meaningful because no other facet of the universe can give the universe itself its experience as you, as the person you are and the choices you make, in your corner of time and space.

If you waste a Tuesday on the couch rewatching The Lord of the Rings and eating potato chips, if you feel guilt and shame for doing it, all of that matters. You think the rock by my doorstep gives the universe that experience of itself? You think the President of the United States does? And the people around you, what they observe of you and how they feel, that too is a product of your subjective perspective.

Maybe this perspective doesn't make a difference to you. That's valid, because the universe also gets to be so many thoughtless motherfuckers, so many self-centered motherfuckers, you can be whatever kind of motherfucker. But you really ought to try and internalize the fact that your existence has inherent meaning and value, because that existence itself is the point, and any other notion of "point" or "value" is something some limited motherfucker put in your head to make you feel less than.

Yeah, what Frosh said.

Here's why I posted that homework assignment earlier. This summary is courtesy of AI.

Quote :
"Albert Camus' 1942 essay The Myth of Sisyphus is a philosophical exploration of the absurd, a concept that arises from the conflict between the human need to find meaning in life and the universe's apparent silence in response. In the essay, Camus uses the Greek myth of Sisyphus as a metaphor for the human struggle against the absurdity of life. In the myth, Sisyphus is condemned by the gods to endlessly roll a boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back down each time he gets close to the top. Camus argues that Sisyphus can find happiness if he realizes that his task is meaningless and accepts the absurdity of his punishment. Camus believes that this acceptance can free Sisyphus mentally, and that he should revolt against the absurd by living life to the fullest, rather than denying it. Camus also explores the possibilities of art to describe the absurd and enrich the experience of those who create it."
