to be fair, walking by yourself at 3am isn't exactly the brightest thing to do in any city

that said, i can't abide even casual thugs, so it would have been funny if they'd attacked him and he whipped out a gun and shot one or two in the kneecap...bet they wouldn't be mugging anyone else for a while

not that i -want- to get in a situation like this (i had a knife pulled on me once and ran like a girl, i outran the nga too )

but, back then i didn't carry. now-a-days it would be a different story. the newspaper would have read:

"white male guns down 2 males of dark complexion and 4 males of light complexion. saves 3 females from potential assault and rape"

more like, you would've pulled out your gun and maybe managed to shoot one or two of them before getting overpowered by the rest of them who now shoot you with your own gun..........instead of getting beat up and losing your wallet you're dead

I agree that this is a good general rule, but say this kid works at a bar/restaurant and doesn't get to come home until 3am. If he's just walking from his car to his dorm, which is reasonable to assume considering the location, how was he supposed to prevent this. I don't think the parking lot of your dorm should be a place that you're really worried about getting jumped by 5 dudes regardless of the hour.

Depends really. I've walked around Manhattan very drunk by myself on numerous occasions. As long as you're out in public its not a real worry. I wouldn't suggest taking shortcuts through alleys, or doing this if you were a woman, but not a huge thing.
