http://www.digsby.com/

Pretty sweet IM/email/social networking client. Compatible with OSX, Linux, and Windows. It looks a bit like Adium, but isn't quite as customizable. I have it set up for my IM and gmail accounts, and am going to leave it at that. I could care less about new Facebook alerts.

It's nice if you're tired of plain old AIM or Trillian. No ads, neat look, nice features.

i like it well enough...i would assume i'm not the only one it takes forever to start up for, though

also, i both like and dislike the fact that you can sign on any computer with digsby and it keeps your settings...i like it for obvious reasons, but i don't know how i feel about a company having all that information of mine on their servers

i also really hate the fact that you have to have an account with them...i have three AIM sn's, for 3 different computers and i WANT to keep them separate...but that means 3 different digsby accounts, as well

Well, shit. I saw the icons and got all excited but didn't click (I was on my windows machine at the time and since I have Adium on my Mac...)

and then miranda to pidgin recently

wasn't quite satisfied with pidgin's look and feel

Wow, those douchebags deleted my comment on their blog for the most recent release.
http://blog.digsby.com/?p=37

Basically I said that I was enjoying Digsby, but wasn't particularly happy with the fact that it automatically downloads the latest version whenever it's released. I have looked everywhere and can't find an option to turn auto-update off.

I don't like anything happening on my computer without my permission. I would much rather check for updates myself, and decide whether or not I want to download them, instead of not having a choice when I open the program.

So anyway, I posted on their blog about it. I said that Digsby was nice but I only use it every few days (on my laptop) and it seems like every time I open it, there's a new version I have to wait for it to download without my permission. Posted it last night...as of right now my post has disappeared and none of the mods/admins have addressed it.

digsby is the heat. been using it since closed beta and have no desire to switch to anything else. it would be nice if they got drag-and-drop file transfers to work for Gtalk, but other than that I cannot complain a bit.

^^Really? I switched from Trillian and Digsby is worlds better. The email/facebook features are great. I also like how it saves all your skins/settings and keeps them no matter what digsby you log into. The pop up feature is great too, i don't actually have to switch to a window while working on a paper/project. Someone will IM me and a litle box will box up in the bottom left and i can reply then it'll disappear. Very convenient.

Ah. Knew you could skin it on linux. Guess you can use GTK+ the same way to skin it on windows. Cool.

These fuckers still push out updates. I haven't used my laptop for a few days, get home to my parent's place (with 512/128 DSL ) and try to sign online for just a minute.

Nope. Why? Because Digsby has to download a 17MB update first, that I didn't want, and I didn't ask for. 60KB/sec....17MB...GAH.

WTF is up with these people? I like to update on MY schedule, not when a program wants to.

^well i'm sure you're the minority here. They have never bothered me, and only delays the log-in a few extra seconds. Although i guess it would be nice to be able to turn off automatic updates.

YES -- you should ALWAYS have the option to turn off automatic updates. Programs should NEVER do anything that you don't specifically tell them to.

^ agreed...digsby was too obnoxious for me to continue using

i went back to pidgin and put forth the effort to find a style/layout/skin that i liked...i really like my IM clients to be as simple as possible

Digsby sucked when it first came out. Months and months haven't changed the fact that it still sucks.

I wouldn't think that. Sounds extremely obnoxious to me and I would immediately uninstall any program that did that. Sometimes having the latest version of a program (especially against your will) is not a good thing.

Adium >>> Digsby from my usage though... mostly because I'm a UI freak... one thing that bothers me is that the Digsby installer wreaks of spyware, though I'm aware that doesn't really mean the app itself does.

Digsby is a lot better than other windows IM programs, that being said - most of them have crappy ui's, bloated ui's, resource hogs, or are crammed full of adware. Digsby is fairly slimmed down and functional, and they actually seem to care about their users input.

Please tell me you're joking about being crammed full of adware. Have you downloaded an installer for Digsby? You have to say no to like half a dozen add-ons before you can install the fucking app. Devs that include add-ons like that are paying their bills, but they're not doing their customers any favors.

well there's nothing better out there atm

last time i tried trillian the UI sucked
miranda was OK but wasn't made for dummies to edit configs and stuff and didn't have all your info stored on their servers
gaim/pidgin is another one not made for dummies

i don't mind spending time to make something work well, add plugins and theme it, but for things like an IM client, it's just so much easier to go with something like digsby. and once it's installed, you never have to see those adware installers again - it upgrades by itself. that's not a huge deal AT ALL for not having any ads on the main window or anywhere else.

i don't see why you people don't like it - it does its job well.

You're right, it does it's job well. However, it has a feature I didn't want or ask for -- namely, sending me automatic updates. There's nothing that say that at some point those updates could have...who knows what bundled with them?

Tonight it auto-updated on my laptop again. Somehow it fucked up and now when I try to open Digsby I get the Windows "fuck off" beep noise. Yet another example of why automatic updates fail...

I don't know how one could make the claim that Pidgin isn't easy - You don't have to do shit to it OOB to get going. Install, input your info for the protocols you use... go.

Yeah, changing themes is a little harder, but not anything more than a 3 second google of "GTK+"

maybe I'm biased because I've been using it for so long, but still, it's not rocket science and is the lightest/easiest install ever

hell, it's even in the default install for gnome on ubuntu

I spoke with one of the developers for Digsby and got this response -- after having it explained, it makes more sense. I hope he doesn't mind me posting his email here...

Quote :
"Charles,

We might add this option after the product leaves beta. For now they are enabled because it allows us to develop more quickly. It prevents bug reports from coming in for issues that are already fixed as well. However, one of the biggest reasons we have auto-updates is protocol changes. Within the last two weeks there were protocol changes with AIM, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. If auto-updates were off we would get tons of bug reports asking us why these are not working. Many users would forget that they turned them off or not make the connection that a protocol may have changed and they need to manually check for updates.

Regards,
Steve"
