When are they going to be in Atlanta?? I'm too lazy to look it up.

I'd love to see Spoon. Not too hot on their last album though.

nah, hating on ga ga ga ga due to the success has been all the rage the past few months. pretty dumb when it's usually the same people who were digging it when it leaked.

i didn't realize rob pope was playing with them, that's pretty cool

that is so dumb. Not only do I think Spoon are a very good band, even when I have people in my car that usually listen to rap, or to top 20 shit, or classical or whatever, they like this record. If you dont enjoy having the windows down playing you got your cherrybomb, you're lying to yourself

Not saying its a bad album...I just like the previous two albums better. I enjoy almost every song on the previous two...but there are a few on gaga that skip over every listen through. It has its share of good songs, just more "not-so-good" songs.

this band rules... confirmed.

Just got back from Carolina Theater and that show was a lot of fun. Outstanding rhythm section.

Don't you hate it when an awesome show is on a weeknight and you have to just make yourself head home and go to fuckin bed? All I want to do after that is go drinking...

they're one of my fiancee's favorite bands... i think she's seen them (or britt solo) like 9 or something times.... but being from Texas, she had many opportunities. ive seen them 4 times with her, they put on a good show.

i really don't understand how this ISN'T "straight out rock". . .

have you ever even heard the band?

^ First, I'm not trying to shit in this thread--I simply posed a question that obviously had an implication. Second, I based my opinion on the two Spoon songs below and a couple more I've heard.

"The Underdog"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=LenPKPqvdJA

"The Way We Get By"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2HExIyMX6SA&feature=related

To use your phrasing: I don't understand what part of these songs is straight-out rock. You know, the good kind that rocks?

Spoon is one more in a line of bands I've seen on SNL lately--and elsewhere--that simply do not rock in the manner I'm accustomed to. Some of those bands are:

Wilco

Vampire Weekend

Panic at the Disco

I swear to God, they're all either unwatchable or damn near it. And I realize that some of you will feel great umbrage concerning my position, which runs counter to your view of these bands as cool or intelligent or some such.

I just want some bands that aren't afraid of fucking power chords, that don't mind some un-PC raunchiness, that don't sound like they're whining, that don't look like they need to shower, and that don't look like they just walked off the set of Revenge of the Nerds. Is that too much to ask?

(BTW, don't be condescending as if I'm so out of touch or something. I was rocking when you were still riding around in your dad's balls.)

for one thing: the wilco performance on snl was pretty damn bad. i'm a fan of wilco. but their last album is pretty crappy.

so you don't like it? fine. no problem with that.

but spoon is pretty straightforward. "the way you get by" is kinda piano heavy (especially the recording you posted). "the underdog" has brass in it. it's not stadium rock or anything for sure. but it's also certainly not a band that is trying to be weird or anything. they're a sparse band that does only what is necessary in their songs (to me at least).

i really can understand your impatience with bands like vampire weekend who seem to be trying to be gimmicky. spoon really doesn't fit there to me AT ALL>

some examples of "straight out rock" spoon songs (found in the links on the side of the videos you linked):

That's just your preference. I think most of the current bands that play the type of style that you are referring to pretty much suck (with a few exceptions of course). If I ever listen to "rock" anymore, it's usually older stuff.

And personally, I don't know if its a phase or I've just grown out of it...but I don't enjoy listening to "rock" anymore. I guess I've mellowed out a little bit, because even the rap that I listen to is more laid-back and soft.

^^^ That was a meaningful response--and I appreciate it a lot. Yes, those songs are definitely more straightforward and up-tempo--still, it's very indie-folksy sounding with a good helping of pop sensibility.

In any event, what would you call the look of some of these bands?

Spoon

Vampire Weekend

Okay, which picture is Jeff Tweedy and Wilco and which one is Booger and the boys from Revenge of the Nerds?

^ I know what you mean.

what do you want them to do? dress in leather pants? but for serious, britt daniel is a handsome fellow.

(but mostly these are just regular looking guys and you've picked goofy photos of them. but yeah. vampire weekend is lame. no argument there)

^ Yeah, I was just tossing that in there. I mean, I'm about the music--a band can look like shit and sound great and I don't really care about the look.

But if you look like shit (I'm not saying they all do) and you sound like shit. . . .
