a tiny misquote. he still says "i am your father" all dramatic like. i imagine it started to give the quote some context back when star wars wasnt so ingrained. 4/12/2008 10:57:34 PM |

The Luke was probably added later to ensure that it was understood the quote was referecing Star Wars.

not to mention, no one talks like shakespeare so you'd sound like an asshole to quote the actual text. 4/12/2008 11:10:49 PM |

According to that page, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely." is a misquotation of "Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." 4/13/2008 12:16:33 AM |

Quote : | ""I woke up this mornin' and I got myself a beer."
* Correctly, according to the book "Light My Fire" by fellow Doors member Ray Manzarek, Jim Morrison was in fact singing "I woke up this mornin' and I got myself a beard", as the song allegedly tells of Morrison waking up after 3 weeks of drug induced sleep. " |

Darth Vader: Luke, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. Luke: I'll never join you! Darth Vader: If you only knew the power of the Dark Side. Obi-wan never told you what happened to your father. Luke: He told me enough! He told me *you* killed him! Darth Vader: No. *I* am your father.4/13/2008 10:47:25 AM |

Quote : | ""Someone set us up the bomb"
* Correct quote: "Somebody set up us the bomb" * The spoken words are "Someone set us up the bomb" in the flash animation which made the phenomenon popular. * "somebody set up us the bomb" is a cheat code in Empire Earth to win the game automatically. * Notes: From a Japanese video game, Zero Wing, with a very unskilled and amusing English translation. Similar to "all your base are belong to us", which occurs in the same game. " |

I blame Tommy Boy.
"Beam me up, Scotty" would have been a more worthy thread starter.

Quote : | "Common Misquotations
"All my possessions for a moment of time" - Queen Elizabeth I
So popularly quoted that we have this quote listed in our list of quotes for QE1, but strictly speaking there is no contemporary source to confirm these last words, and hence they are probably apocryphal.
"Beam me up, Scotty" - Gene Roddenberry
Captain Kirk never actually used these words on the Starship Enterprise, the closest in fact being the occasional "Beam us up, Mr Scott".
"Dreams are the royal road to consciousness" - Sigmund Freud
Infact this is a summary of the full quote - "The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind."
"Elementary, my dear Watson" - Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes)
This quote is not actually found in any of his books, but rather found in a film review in the New York Times, 19 October 1929.
"It is necessary only for the good man to do nothing for evil to triumph." - Edmund Burke
As with the Queen Elizabeth quote, so widely attributed that we list it in our selection of Burke quotes. However, it has never been traced in his writings.
"Play it again, Sam" - Julius J. Epstein, Casablanca
Probably the most famous mis-quote from a film, this statement is never actually made in the film. The closest is Bogart saying "If she can stand it, I can. Play it!", and Bergman saying "Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By".
"Why don't you come up and see me sometime" - Mae West
Never actually said. Probably alteration of her line in the film She Done Him Wrong "Why don't you come up sometime, and see me?"
"Let them eat cake". - Marie Antoinette
In fact, she actually said "Let them eat bread".
"And not a lot of people know that". - Michael Caine
Has been widely attributed to Michael Caine in the film 'Alphie'. BUT the actual quote was 'not many people know this...', and I have a theory that the misquote emanated from Mike Yarwood the 70's "impressionist", who I believe got it wrong during a skit in one of his shows. [Rik]
The line "You dirty rat" so often attributed to actor, James Cagney, (and used extensively by his impersonators), was never actually uttered by him an any movie. " |
