I can't post in Old School so y'all better look in here
All things being equal (cost, no preference for where to practice law afterward, etc), which would you say is the better choice for law school: UNC or Ohio State? UNC is higher in the Vault rankings but OSU is higher in the US News rankings. I've heard mixed opinions on both in terms of national placement potential and faculty. Could anybody currently at UNC give me some input? Thanks in advance you guys are real pals! 4/15/2008 2:25:38 PM |

I know you say all things being equal but those are the things that matter most...
im at unc law and like it quite a bit. As far as rankings go, they are both good schools so it should be a relative non-issue for you. If you want to practice around here, go to UNC. If you want to practice around ohio, go there. ---- obviously it might depend on what kind of law you wish to practice as well----
p.s. If you are really hung up on rankings: until a two years ago, UNC hovered around 20/21 in the U.S. news ranking. The issues that forced a decline were pretty trivial and should be rectified for next years report.
If you really want to know more about the school, just let me know.

have you gotten into both of these schools already? if so, then you should apply to some tier 1 schools and see what happens. 4/15/2008 2:51:14 PM |

^Yeah, I have.
I applied to UVA and Emory and got rejected at both, waitlisted at William and Mary. I thought anything in the top 50 was tier 1 though, unless you're referring to T14. But I had a 163 LSAT so that pretty much rules those out.... 4/15/2008 2:53:01 PM |

Tier 1 is the top 50 (US news started the whole tier system thing and the top 100 are split between tier one and tier two ----- although if you go to US News it lists all top one hundred as tier 1.)......

But seriously, don't take any of the rankings to heart. Unless it is a top 10 school (particularly if you plan on trying to become a prof.), it isn't gonna make that big of a difference (except for where you practice and how much you owe).
For the record, I got in at Chicago (I think they are ranked somewhere between 5-10) and turned it down to go to UNC...... but I wanted to stay here and not pay a great deal in tuition.
I'll send you a pm with more about UNC tonight Action.... I've got to go to campus for a while. 4/15/2008 3:25:49 PM |

who abbreviates 'the'
and for that matter are there so many OSU's that you have to specify which with a definite article?
it's really the dumbest thing i've probably ever heard used in anything resembling the mainstream...

My family is all aghast (I'm the fourth generation of NCSU students in my family).
Weren't the seat deposits due yesterday for UNC? Did you go to the Admitted Student's Day? It was pretty informative.

^^NOTHING will make me a Carolina fan... I finished my tenure at State first, so they're still happy
^Well, at least you have more time to make up your mind. I'd suggest going and doing a tour with the school, even though their exams are starting now. The faculty would still be able to talk with you. Email a professor in whatever you want to concentrate in. Assistant Dean States is also really excited about hearing from admitted students. One of the things I liked about UNC was the study abroad opportunities and the 5 different journals you could apply to write for.

^I'm trying to do patent law, and it looks like from their course listings they only have one course for that at UNC. But everyone says to go to the best ranked school/best located school you can get into regardless of specialization. A patent professor would probably be able to help me figure out what my job opportunities. Emailing one of them would probably be a good idea. Thanks.

short answer: UNC
Ohio State = Trimesters, shit tons of kids, and shitty ass Ohio. Plus, everyone in college sports hates OSU except people that go there
UNC sucks (coming from a lifelong state fan) but at least you'll be in the south. It is well respected, especially if you plan on working in the south, north carolina, or especially the triangle area.
or say fuck it and go for Wake Forest 4/15/2008 6:22:50 PM |

Eh, they'll get over it. UNC Law is a good decision if you want to work in NC... Obviously school rivalries should having NOTHING to do with picking which grad school to go to. If I could have gotten in to Duke's B-school I would have got my MBA there (and most people on here know I'm an AVID duke hater)... but I settled on a UC school.
Just don't become a John Edwards and ignore your undergrad alma mater when it's convenient...

Unless you want to practice in Ohio, then I'd pick UNC. You'll have a lot more opportunities to practice in NC is you go to law school here.
If you don't care where the fuck you practice...go to Ohio State. People can say whatever they want about Ohio being a shitty state (and by all means it is probably in the lower 1/6th in the states in the US)...but Columbus can still be a fun time. I went up there about 4 or 5 years ago for the State/Ohio State game and had a ball. If I knew I was going to seek employment somewhere else in the US, then I could do three years in law school in Columbus. You don't have a lot of free time in law school anyways....but it would be fun as shit to be able to go to 5 or 6 games a year at the Shoe and party with some young Buckeye co-eds. 4/15/2008 6:26:27 PM |

You should keep a few things in mind. 1. At either OSU or UNC you'll have to be near the top 10-20% if you're looking to work for larger law firms anywhere in the country. Buckle down and work your ass off first year. 2. If you're interested in doing patent law, be sure you have an undergrad degree in a hard science before going to law school (it's a pre-req to sit for the patent bar, and you'd be amazed how many people come to law school with degrees in humanities and then want to do IP) 3. Take into consideration scholarships and cost. OSU and UNC are close enough in the rankings and reputation that it doesn't make a ton of sense to take on tens of thousands of extra debt. 4/15/2008 7:06:46 PM |
