Last year's thread I made is > 90 days old, and the search function kind of sucks, but how bout them Knights! I said fuck it and bought some season tickets since they're insanely cheaper than Bobcats tickets and I'm going to go tonight
I recently heard that North Carolina has a total of TWENTY minor league baseball teams, and combined more people in NC go to minor league baseball games than NASCAR races
Anyway I figured I'd get some season tix so I could have access to the good shit once they build the new stadium downtown

Since I'm from Gastonia, I went to Knights games growing up and I always thought it was funny that the Charlotte Knights play in Fort Mill, South Carolina. 4/15/2008 4:43:32 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
yeah seriously...they dont even play in the same state, let alone city
although i jump on 77 from woodlawn and i'm there in 10-15 minutes
its already in the works that they're building a new park downtown though (4th Ward iirc)...still a few years out, they're currently in the planning/development phase, but that will be pretty sweet
i vaguely remember seeing the Charlotte O's play at Crockett Park back in the day which actually was in Charlotte
on the plus side right now though, there are a couple cool bars within a mile or two of the park...good people and smokin hot waitresses

Is that counting the collegiate summer teams? I've never really considered that the minors cause they're not getting paid.
Here's the Wikipedia list:
Triple-A: Durham Bulls, Charlotte Knights
Double-A: Carolina Mudcats (Zebulon)
Single-A: Asheville Tourists, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Hickory Crawdads, Kannapolis Intimidators, the Kinston Indians! (my kinda hometown team), Winston-Salem Warthogs
Rookie: Burlington Royals
I've thought a good idea, although I doubt it could be scheduled and agreed to by everyone, is to create a college-style statewide minor-league baseball tournament since baseball's presence in the state isn't really that high. Alternate hosting between Durham and Charlotte, double-elimination with 10 teams from across the state, every city of decent size in the state would be represented except for Wilmington (that's counting Zebulon as "greater Raleigh").4/15/2008 4:48:57 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
not sure what teams are included in the "twenty" but i heard that number on the radio a few days ago...maybe its not accurate...but there are a good number of teams
i'd love to see some kind of tournament between different teams...i also know some of the teams are linked, ie Knights are White Sox AAA, Intimidators are White Sox A
I also like seeing big leaguers doing injury rehab stints in the minors...I remember Curt Schilling pitched against the Knights a season or two ago and the place was packed with Bo Sox fans...I'll be keeping up with injuries in the majors this year 4/15/2008 4:52:05 PM |

There are also summer league teams in Wilmington, Fayetteville, Kill Devil Hills, Asheboro, Thomasville, Wilson, Gastonia, Forest City, and Edenton.
I think that's 19

lost to the Scrotum Wilks Yankees last night...they had Shelley Duncan and Kai Igawa among others...Knights had some pretty ballin relief pitcher who struck out the first two batters and got the 3rd to pop out...Perez I think was his name 4/16/2008 11:58:39 AM |

I'm surprised you got season tickets
Theres way too many games that I would never go to nearly half of them 4/16/2008 12:01:40 PM |

i'll give them away when i can't make it but they're so inexpensive its not that bad...I feel guilty if I can't use Bobcats tickets cause I'm throwing away hundreds of dollars, but if I can't get to a Knights game I'm throwing away 20 bucks...I'm not going tonight for example cause I'm going to the Bobcats finale...probably not renewing those tickets though...just not enough value 4/16/2008 4:16:53 PM |

^ Tree ... don't get rid of your tix when you can't go. The Knights will let you have a General Admission seat with an unused season ticket. My company has 4 season tix that NOBODY uses (except 2 or 3 of us). I hoard unused tix until i have 5 or 6; and then i'll take a group of buddies to a thirsty thursday. 4/16/2008 8:22:18 PM |

not that anyone on TWW besides a few people would know the difference.. but it's actually 3rd Ward, just a block or two over from BOA stadium
and p.s. it's "uptown"

3rd ward, i stand corrected
however as a native charlottean as of 1980, and despite my knowledge that center city is at a higher elevation than most of the rest of the city, i still call it downtown
uptown refers to the cabaret at tryon and morehead 4/17/2008 1:10:40 PM |

Charlotte's not big enough for it to matter
We can say uptown or downtown and people know what we're talking about
In a bigger city, they're two distinct locations
I was at the game tonight
It was fun but I kept getting bitched at by the bitch I took
First for eating during the national anthem
then for drinking too much (I really wasn't at all)
then for not telling her beforehand that it was gonna be cold out
eventually I just said fuck it and we left in the 7th 4/17/2008 11:59:16 PM |

You didn't miss much if you left after that 5 run flurry. We shut them out the rest of the night.
I was there with a group, and all the ladies were like "is it over yet, I'm cold!".

Can this be the Warthogs thread too? Good.
Got off work early and caught a game against the Potomac Nationals this afternoon. Brandon Allen, 22 year old 1B, looks like he's coming around. He had a 2 run homer in the first, I think his third or fourth of the year. The pitching for both teams was terrible. The Warthogs starter looked good, 6 IP, 2 or 3 hits. Everyone else just shit all over themselves as soon as the hit the rubber, though. 4/23/2008 3:54:20 PM |

Dontrelle Willis will be pitching in Charlotte on Monday night 5/11/2008 12:31:11 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
Dontrelle gave up back-to-back solo HRs to Brad "B" Eldred and Royce "Da 5'9"" Huffman
shoulda got the loss but the Mudhens ended up winning 6-5 I think but I know Dontrelle (and the Knights starter) got a no-decision...and Mike Hessman homered AGAIN...I swear if Detroit didn't have Brandon Inge, and especially Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera, calling Hessman up to MLB would be a complete no-brainer, but the Tigers' bats are good enough where Hessman will probably continue to lead the IL in homers for a long time 5/13/2008 12:39:40 AM |

i want to say he was born in 78 so he's probably 30
i just know he leads the IL (half the AAA teams) in HRs and he literally hit 5 homers during the Mudhens/Knights 5 game series (and 2 of the games were only 7 innings!)
EDIT
looks like he turned 30 a couple months ago http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7214
from looking at his career stats you would never think he could have the power he does now, but i swear the only reason he isnt in the bigs has GOT to be because of the tigers' offensive strength...he was fun to watch this series
