For some reason, my computer shut down. When I tried to reboot, the dos screen would load, followed only by a flashing underscore at the top left corner of an otherwise black screen. Windows will not load any further. Is this a sign that my computer has completely crashed? or is there an easy way to fix this?

Unplug any USB devices and try again.

Provide a little more detail about what you mean by "dos screen". My thought is that something might be getting hung at the boot loader if it's not what ^ said.

reboot w/ windows install CD

choose the option for the recovery console

run fixmbr

run chkdsk

reboot
