nah. It is about 2 hours away, but not on the way to anything, really. I'll get there sooner or later, but with gas the way it is, it'll have to be on the way somewhere else. 10/6/2008 6:46:36 PM |

So, my Failetown expedition was something of a Faileure. I figured I'd set out this afternoon, looking at Google Map's predicted 4 hour time and figuring I could cover it in 3 hours. I also decided that I would take a slightly more scenic route than their suggested route. The route I chose was actually fewer miles but over slower roads. Fortunately, they were less patrolled as well.
Anyway, I left around 1pm and realized that I'd be going through Georgiana, Alabama, where Hank Williams spent part of his boyhood and learned to play guitar. I'll post pictures of me on the front porch tomorrow. This set me back about 45 minutes though, and I had to floor it trying to get out to Failetown before the sundown. It didn't help that I made a wrong turn in Thomasville onto MLK Jr. For what its worth, Caucasians driving pickup trucks down an MLK that is off a side road, off a side road, off a two lane county road get weird looks.
Anyway, I finally get turned around the right way and reach Campbell, the closest town with a post office (again, pics to be posted tomorrow), right at sundown. I turn onto the dirt road that leads to Failetown. Now, mind you, this is 20 miles from Thomasville, the nearest town of any consequence, with a population of less than 5,000. I'm now turning down off a dilapidated two lane blacktop, after sundown, onto a typically narrow dirt road. The people who live here aren't looking for visitors. Then my friend who was riding with me, starts launching into a discussion about a story she did on a heavily booby-trapped meth lab that was busted in Enterprise a few months ago . . .
So we drive down the road a good ways, till my GPS is dead center on the intersection that the Wikipedia article places Failetown at. Not much there. A street sign that says Pearl, a few rotting houses I can kind-of make out in my headlights, a bunch of trailers, and not much else. I drive up and down with my flashlight looking for the cemetery, or something Faileish but I can't find a thing. After about 20 minutes I figure its about time to split so I drive on back.
Sadly, I've got nothing really to show for it, but I'll probably head back before I leave Alabama. *shrug* 12/27/2008 11:12:32 PM |

Yeah, I'm definitely going back. I'll hit up the one near Selma pretty soon too. It was a cool trip and somewhat poetic that my Failetown expedition was a first time Faileure. 12/28/2008 3:35:40 PM |
