holy fuck. that's crazy. Definitely time to build a new system. Only question is what processor... It's gonna be for a Photoshop CS3 workstation and as of now CS3 can't use more than 2 cores.

would my HTPC benefit from a quad-core machine? i currently have a core duo (not c2d) proc in there (2ghz) and it WORKS, but will sometimes bog down when recording two HD shows and watching a recording at the same time

If you're using the standard freeware apps that most htpc homebrews use then it probably wouldn't benefit from multicore.

currently using mythbuntu (the one releasing this month)...but come this summer, i'm planning on wiping it out and running a windows-based app, since the linux guru roommate i have is leaving and i don't want to be stuck with a nix box when i can use windows just fine

dual cores are plenty fast for a media box. For multi-tasking, go with quad core.

With the right programming, a HTPC can benefit from a quad-core processor, as decoding data is usually a task which lends itself to parallelization well. While I doubt there are many implementations of this now, I wouldn't be surprised if it is something we see more of in the next 5 years; especially if quad core processors gain widespread acceptance. If you build it, they will come...

for those who work retail intel has a annual bundle that they offer for a sick price. 3 months agp i got the q6600, intel mobo, and vista home for $215. most employees get them and go straight to ebay with em so i'd check there too .

^^ yeah but you have to know what's good and what's not - like those people are just into the cheapest components possible. it's more useful to have something that takes quality into account too so you don't have to do so much research when it's time to build a new PC

Have you looked into the thread? There's cheap ass components and then good ones. They give you hints to which ones are good buys and good components. Otherwise, just look to every other online computer enthusiast board or website. They always have the current lists of "what to buy" guides. Extremetech.com, anandtech.com, tom's hardware, cnet, maximumpc... the list goes on. Many split them up to cheap gaming, budget box, and hardcore gamer lists.
