36 shootings, 9 homicides reported in Chicago over weekend

Quote :
"CHICAGO: An outburst of gunfire rattled the city during the weekend, with at least nine people killed in 36 separate acts of violence.

The shootings were reported from Friday until Monday morning, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Monday. They included gang shootings, drive-by attacks, and even one case in which someone used an AK-47 to shoot up a plumbing supply store.

Then on Monday evening, a man was shot to death and three other people were wounded in a robbery attempt at a McDonald's, police said.

Authorities did not immediately say whether any of the weekend shootings were thought to be related."

Quote :
"During the same weekend last year, there were 19 shootings, including four homicides, and 21 shootings were reported during the same weekend in 2006, police statistics show."

Mayor Jane Byrne and the city council began to hold hearings on an ordinance proposed by alderman Ed Burke banning the further sale and registration of handguns in Chicago. Receiving strong support from Byrne and her allies, and coming in the wake of the assassination attempts on President Reagan and Pope John Paul II, the ordinance passed. All residents who purchased and registered their handguns prior to January 1982 were allowed to keep their weapons. Chicago became the first major city to enact a handgun freeze in United States history.

...

In 1992, led by Mayor Richard M. Daley, the Chicago City Council voted to ban assault weapons. Contests over gun control continued in 1998, when the city and Cook County filed a lawsuit against gun manufacturers.

isnt a Daley still mayor there?

nothing to do with guns, but Chicago's mayoral-family-for-life is an example of one major reason I don't want a Clinton back in the White House. She might not be nearly as incompetent as GWB, but god knows theres too much nepotism already in the back hallways of power.

^ NB: I never indicated that Chicago didn't have a history--I mean, I've seen The Untouchables too many times to count.

But Al Capone died in 1947. In Chicago this past weekend, 36 shootings and 9 homicides occurred. And during the same weekend last year, there were 19 shootings, including four homicides, and 21 shootings were reported during the same weekend in 2006.

This ain't The History Channel. This shit's real and it's happening right now.

Obama Record May Be Gold Mine For Critics
Eight Years As State Senator Were Full Of Controversial Votes, Including Abortion And Gun Control

Quote :
"(AP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may have a lot of explaining to do.

He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. He supported allowing retired police officers to carry concealed weapons, but opposed allowing people to use banned handguns to defend against intruders in their homes. And the list of sensitive topics goes on.

With only a slim, two-year record in the U.S. Senate, Obama doesn't have many controversial congressional votes which political opponents can frame into attack ads. But his eight years as an Illinois state senator are sprinkled with potentially explosive land mines, such as his abortion and gun control votes."

Quote :
"Obama regularly supported gun-control measures, including a ban on semiautomatic 'assault weapons' and a limit on handgun purchases to one a month.

He also opposed letting people use a self-defense argument if charged with violating local handgun bans by using weapons in their homes. The bill was a reaction to a Chicago-area man who, after shooting an intruder, was charged with a handgun violation.

Supporters framed the issue as a fundamental question of whether homeowners have the right to protect themselves."

Quote :
"Voted against making gang members eligible for the death penalty if they kill someone to help their gang (2001) [emphasis added]."

Quote :
"Obama occasionally supported higher taxes, joining other Democrats in pushing to raise more than 300 taxes and fees on businesses in 2004 to help solve a budget deficit. The increases passed the Senate 30-28.

That's one reason Illinois business groups gave Obama a low rating, while labor groups praised him. But even Obama's allies say he refused to become a rubber stamp for their legislation.

"He always wants to understand an issue and think it through," said Roberta Lynch, deputy director for Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "You have to make your case no matter who you are."

For six years, Obama served in a Republican-controlled Senate, so he and fellow Democrats only got a fraction of their bills signed into law.

During his last two years, Democrats controlled the chamber and he was the go-to guy on a variety of issues. He helped pass legislation overhauling Illinois' troubled capital punishment system and was a key figure in requiring a massive statewide study of traffic stops to look for signs of racial profiling. Although police groups opposed the legislation, they say Obama listened to their concerns and accepted some of their suggestions to improve the bill.

Even when he was in the political minority, Obama sometimes played a critical role. He helped write one of the rare ethics laws in a state known for government corruption and worked on welfare reform with Republicans.

He sponsored legislation to bar job and housing discrimination against gays, and he helped create a state version of the earned income tax credit for the poor. Obama also led efforts to reject federal rules that would have put workers' overtime checks in jeopardy. "

This reaffirms what I already thought about Obama. He leans pretty far to the left, but he's no partisan hack and puts a lot of thought into his decisions. If he were a little more moderate, I'd probably vote for him.

Obama has a plan for Chicago: We're pulling out in 16 months.

Chicago working to prevent repeat of deadly weekend

Quote :
"CHICAGO (AP) — Police planned to increase patrols and put SWAT officers and specialized units on the streets over the weekend, a show of force aimed at deterring violence like the three dozen shootings that left nine people dead last weekend.

'Weather permitting, we will have our helicopter up,' said police spokeswoman Monique Bond, who said Thursday night was relatively quiet, with only four shootings, none fatal [emphasis and added].

Meanwhile, religious leaders said they had persuaded some churches to open their doors in the afternoons and evenings to protect people from gunfire."

Quote :
"A fired-up Daley blasted the gun industry [typical liberal bullshit] and called on parents and adults to do their part by intervening to help troubled youth and by working to keep others on the right path."

There's a lot to chew on in this one: guns, violence, death, public education, law, politics, and failure--take your pick. But Chicago's schools and the city itself definitely need to be cleaned up.

Chicago Violence Haunts Obama as Gun-Control Backers Left Cold
October 7, 2009

Quote :
"Chicago's violence has long burdened Obama's political career, including the embarrassment of a missed vote as a state senator that hurt his 2000 bid for Congress. [U.S. Education Secretary Arne] Duncan, 44, a Chicago native and Obama friend, admits to 'total failure' in curbing violence during his seven years as chief of the nation's third-largest school system, which serves more than 400,000 students, 85 percent of them living below the poverty line.

Some gun-control advocates question the administration's timing as Duncan and Holder arrive after a highly publicized beating that didn't involve a gun."

Quote :
"Doing so in the Albert case 'provides the cover' to address youth violence without confronting the gun lobby, said Mannard, whose group's board of directors included Duncan until he left for his current post."

Quote :
"Daley initially played down the impact of the Albert case on the city’s Olympics bid. Still, his first public comments upon his return from Copenhagen were to address the violence and the 'code of silence' surrounding it.

Gun issues in Chicago will remain in the national spotlight following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Sept. 30 announcement that it will hear a challenge of the city’s handgun ban, implemented in 1982 to combat urban crime.

Duncan said earlier this year that his attempts to curb violence were ineffective when he oversaw Chicago's schools.

'I thought I had made things better in some areas,' he said April 14 in Chicago. 'This is an area where I was a total failure.'"

Um. . .290 students were wounded and 34 were killed during the 2008-2009 school year in Chicago and some of you want to discuss one kid who was beat up by a cop? Wow.

I guess it has to be deaths on foreign soil allegedly caused by conservatives to matter to you. You realize that Chicago is run by Democrats and the school system there was run until recently by Obama's education secretary, right?
