why? the article i linked was from today and it says its finished but not ready for the public...i was going to make a thread a few weeks ago cause i was talking to this m$ guy on a plane who had a few beverages in him and he told me it was coming out at the end of the month but it was supposed to be hush hush...anyway i dont know of any tww policies about not having SP threads...especially since vista blows and XP is a lot more stable already

also it appears your thread was locked since there was already a Vista thread...i dont know of an all encompassing XP thread since most people have run XP for years

mr . bobbydigital said that an update or a service pack is not thread worthy. i think otherwise and obviously you do to.

It's a shame that you took a locked thread so personally. However, given that search is currently broken, I'm not going to lock any duplicate threads unless it's on the front page until that's fixed

^^except xp sp3 still outperforms vista sp1

... and about the Vista SP1 thread, there was already a Vista thread on the first couple pages... there's no official windows xp thread.

i meant inclusive, there's no thread that this would "fall under" / be included in.

Vista is all-inclusive for all things Vista related.... if there's not a thread about it, then it can be more specific

but for instance, i'm not going to talk about beta 5 in a beta 4 thread... that would just be silly.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/XP-SP3-RC-vs-Vista-SP1-RC-Benchmarking-Irrelevant-Says-Microsoft-72682.shtml

Another benchmark:
http://www.principledtechnologies.com/Clients/Reports/Microsoft/VistaXPBusResp.pdf

Seems they're about the same.

^Plus that test involved one gig of ram. Who uses vista with one gig of ram? I think it would be more appropriate to test it with 2-4, and from what i can tell the benchmarks are about the same once you use more modern specs.

Although i think my biggest thing is that i use Vista 64 and it's faster than XP 32 (xp 64 support sucks) mainly because it can address more ram.

yeah, with 4gb of ram, there is a NOTICEABLE difference between vista 64 and xp 32 (i haven't tried vista 32 or xp 64, though, so my experience is incomplete)

the highest usage i've ever gotten out of vista 64 is 66% of 4gb, and it's constantly between 40-45gb just being on, which probably accounts for the snappier responses in vista compared to xp

Yeah i booted up XP just to compare because i haven't booted up XP on this machine in a while, and everything was slow and not as responsive as vista. This also might be due to the fact it was 32 bit xp and 64 bit vista though.

i agree completely 64-bit Vista kills 32-bit XP, and is exponentially noticeable with memory 4GB+ and over

but 32-bit Vista is an entirely different beast and i can tell you it IS indeed MUCH slower than 32-bit XP

^^I've been running vista ultimate 64 bit for almost a year i guess. i keep it running usually 24/7 on the computer i put together. Never had a single issue with it.

According to that benchmark i see no differences. I guess it all depends on who benchmarks it.

^that's one report, and all they talk about are Microsoft products (IE, Office) oh, yeah, and Quickbooks, in a business setting. not really relevant for home users

benchmarks are not always truthful for everyday activities, multitasking, etc. i still think XP is faster unless you have Vista prefetch EVERYTHING, then since it's actually hogging resources to store all the stuff, it loads/launches faster, but at the cost of having newer hardware and 4GB or more of memory.

Vista performs better with better hardware, but there is a wall about how low Vista can go before XP is faster in nearly every regard.

for gaming i'll stick with XP thanks anyways.

so you'd prefer to hack every single game to get it to work with dx10? I just don't want to go to the trouble.

^^we've had this discussion before, i'm not going to argue you about it, i play different games than you.

for online FPS's i'd rather have faster load times than DX10 effects, just my opinion, for me getting in the game faster is more important... along with staying "in" the game... i've had numerous crashs to desktop on games running in Vista (when they weren't designed for Vista)

I'm going to definitely 2nd this opinion to hold off...I say that because I installed it on one system, it seemed to go on ok, but I couldn't boot back up...endless restart loop

I'm having to boot off an XP CD to repair Windows lol so I'd wait on that link that Shaggy posted

btw it'd be pretty nice if windows could go ahead and ask some timezone, product key, domain, etc early on and save your answers in a little file so you could enter some info at first and basically walk away without having to wait to enter info throughout the install

i realize you can do this through deployment, but i just mean with a standalone install

There is good reason why Service packs roll out in stages. Glad you guys are eager to try it out, but I'd pretty highly advise waiting for it to arrive for the general public, unless you have some immediate need.

RTM just means that's the package that goes out first. It goes to vendors and partners first because they have close contact with MS, and so problems can be quickly identified and resolved.

By the time this hits windows update it will either a) have maaannny more hotfixes rolled into a later package, or b) have those hotfixes in a separate rollup that will be downloaded with the SP3 update.

They're releasing exactly the same version. The reason for the delay is to block people running RMS from installing XP SP3 and Vista SP1:

Quote :
"Microsoft, which last week targeted Tuesday, April 29 for public distribution of XP SP3, is preparing to block PCs running Dynamics RMS from downloading XP SP3 and Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Download Center, the spokesperson said.

Once that block is in place, Microsoft will release Windows XP SP3 to the public through Windows Update and Download Center."
