I'm going to use this thread to ask questions and have you guys help me out.
Because sometimes I don't feel like googling or wikipedia-ing

and sometimes i might need a little more explanation than what i can find.

my question for the day.

What exactly is ironic?
I want examples of something that is ironic as opposed to something that is just say, coincidental.

i want to use both of these words in the correct way
sorta like the terms continually and continuously.

today, we are all grammar nazis

im going to the store. ill be back in like 30 min

it's like rain on your wedding day

it's the good advice that you just didn't take

but the thing is.
wikipedia will give you definitions and shit.

sometimes it's better to have someone explain certain things to you.

like i know exactly how a car engine works because my dad told me. i read about it and was completely confused.
my dad went though it with me once.

bam got it.

[Edited on April 23, 2008 at 1:14 PM. Reason : ^ and ^^ i've always heard those are NOT ironic]

I guess irony would be something like, if you were a cow butcher for your entire life, and then you were killed one day by a stampeding herd of cattle

Ironic is the fact that the NAACP is always bitching about inequality yet most likely the democratic candidate for president will be black.

It's like at the end of Romeo and Juliet when Juliet fakes her death so they can be together. Romeo finds Juliet and thinks she is dead (when she just had that stuff that made her appear dead) so he takes the poison and dies, then she wakes up to find him really dead and kills herself.

On the subject of the "Ironic" song, that verse about the guy with the fear of flying seems very ironic. After overcoming his fears and expecting a safe flight, the plane crashes. That fits the "situational irony" definition in the wiki article.

If a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck, he is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony.

Darryl Stingley, the pro football player, was paralyzed after a brutal hit by Jack Tatum. Now Darryl Stingley’s son plays football, and if the son should become paralyzed while playing, it will not be ironic. It will be coincidental. If Darryl Stingley’s son paralyzes someone else, that will be closer to ironic. If he paralyzes Jack Tatum’s son that will be precisely ironic.

Quote :
"Usage Note: The words ironic, irony, and ironically are sometimes used of events and circumstances that might better be described as simply "coincidental" or "improbable," in that they suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly. Thus 78 percent of the Usage Panel rejects the use of ironically in the sentence In 1969 Susie moved from Ithaca to California where she met her husband-to-be, who, ironically, also came from upstate New York. Some Panelists noted that this particular usage might be acceptable if Susie had in fact moved to California in order to find a husband, in which case the story could be taken as exemplifying the folly of supposing that we can know what fate has in store for us. By contrast, 73 percent accepted the sentence Ironically, even as the government was fulminating against American policy, American jeans and videocassettes were the hottest items in the stalls of the market, where the incongruity can be seen as an example of human inconsistency."

"If one discounts cosmic irony, however, it is arguable that the song is ironic in and of itself - there is a fundamental incongruity in a song titled "Ironic" which ultimately contains no irony, an interpretation that Morissette herself has supported."
