I know this thread has been made before but the search wasn't working for me. I have a pinched nerve in my lower back and need to find a chiropractor around here to do a little therapy/adjustment.
Recommend a good/affordable chiropractor in the raleigh or cary area. 4/23/2008 4:46:06 PM |

if you have a real problem, they don't work.
it's a waste of money for probably 95% of the patients who see them, believe me. see an actual spine specialist (doctor) if you can. 4/23/2008 7:19:44 PM |

so why the hell did you ask for a new one?
Kelly's overall point, though, is that any legitimate work that Chiropractors do, PTs or Orthopedists do also, with the added benefit of them having gone to medical school. Anything that a chiropractor does that cannot or is not done by a PT or Orthapedist is likely bunk.
having said that - i go once a month to Swank Chiropractic on Cary Parkway, not because i feel like it does any real good, but because my insurance covers it so for $10 a month I can get my back cracked and it feels really good 4/23/2008 7:29:54 PM |

I find it entertaining when people call chiropractors quacks. First, there are some that did go to medical school. Infact, chiropractic care was started by an MD. Second, there are people that have back problems (such as my wife) who was told can only be healed by surgery. After a length of time going to a chiropractor, she is virtually good as new. 4/23/2008 9:44:25 PM |

my girlfriend had a problem a while back with a pinched nerve. a pinched nerve in her lower back that made her hip hurt/go slightly numb. if it IS a pinched nerve you should definitely go to a real specialist. an honest chiropractor told me that if he found a pinched nerve in my preliminary tests he would rather refer met to a specialist cause moving things around can do real damage. i didnt have one but like i said my girlfriend did and let it go too long, only doing chiropractic and acupuncture. when she finally went to a real specialist to have tests done they scheduled surgury for the next week to clear out the area that was pinching the nerve.
dont play around just get it looked at sooner than later. it may be nothing, but its good to know for sure. 4/23/2008 10:16:22 PM |

umm, yeah.... an MD who thought that literally all diseases and problems with the body could be fixed by spinal manipulation. From the horses mouth

seriously - Palmer was a quack, and legitimate Reform Chiropractors have all but abandoned his original theories. Reforms basically practice a subset of approved and proven Physical Therapy and Orthopedic practices and manipulations. These guys are OK, but don't expect miracles, and don't expect anything from them that a PT couldn't do. Also, if a chiropractor mentions anything about subluxation or claims that his practices will make you healthier or get rid of disease or anything like that, just leave4/23/2008 10:17:34 PM |

All I have are anecdotal results relating to me. Twice in my life I have had problems where I kind of waddled and couldn't sleep on my side without severe pain at the point of my hip. I went to a doctor who looked at X-rays and told me he didn't know what was wrong.
I went to a chiropractor and within a month I was FINE.
Since I have been going to my current chiropractor, there have been several occasions when I did shit that ended up causing me to be in pain, and then after I left him (or over a couple of visits) things were FINE.
The most specific example I can give you is from an acute injury I got while playing indoor soccer, where I hurt my wrist, and it was sore for about a month before I mentioned anything to him. It just wasn't getting significantly better, and I couldn't put any pressure on it without severe pain. I mentioned it to him and he popped it, and it hurt like a motherfucker when he did it. I thought he was nuts for a second, and wasn't too sure that he had done the right thing. He said that he would probably adjust it every time he saw me (which was about once a month) for the next few months. It still hurt a decent amount after the first time, but after the second and third times he did that adjustment, it was better each time. Now I am FINE.
So those are my anecdotal accounts of chiropractic. I'm sure for everything else, they are quacks, though. 4/23/2008 11:04:01 PM |

i'm not defending them on the whole, as i agree that i'd generally prefer an MD
HOWEVER, i've TWICE gone to a chiropractor for neck pain (once was pretty painful, the other time was so bad that i couldn't straighten my neck past about a 45 degree angle. it was BAD). In both cases, he snapped it back into shape in about 10 minutes. worked great (although in the case of the bad time, i was still kinda sore for the rest of the day). 4/23/2008 11:19:54 PM |

The fact that you've been going to one for 4 years tells you that they aren't "fixing" anything.
I've heard too many b.s. chiropractor stories to believe in them. They usually go something like this: You have had a great regimen of chiropractor visits, but every once in a while you miss a few visits either because you're too busy or just didn't feel like spending the money. Then you go back and they shake their heads and say something to the effect of "OMG!!! This is really bad...We're going to have to start back at Level 1." Or maybe they ask you if you have lifted something heavy in the last few weeks (which 99% of people have done) and then they use that as their excuse. Either way, they always have an excuse as to why it's your fault that the treatment isn't working.
It's a lifelong bilking system. It will never end until you get real medical attention or fix the underlying issues. It could be physical damage to your back/neck which damn well won't get fixed by "an adjustment." Some of these things will only be picked up with an x-Ray or MRI and a very trained eye. It could be that one of your legs is shorter than the other which is somewhat common, yet I have never heard of a chiropractor measuring their patient's legs. It could be that you're too fat, your titties are too big, or you wear shitty shoes. Who knows. I just don't think Chiropractors are the answer to any of these things.

Go to a real doctor, or perhaps you can find some way to cure your back problems with herbs and tiger penis. Either ways just as good. 4/23/2008 11:42:15 PM |

it's not like i've been going once a month for 4 years. I injure my neck...i go for 3 visits...i hurt my back...i go for a few more visits. It works for me...i didn't need a thread discussing how ya'll think chiros are quacks i just wanted to know if anyone had a good one around the area.

i did go to an MD. His response was "hmmm i think it's probably just a pulled muscle. Here's a few prescriptions for pain killers." MDs are too quick to prescribe meds and push you out of their office so they can see their next patient imo
