That picture is real, I saw it on the AP wire when it came out. That guy I believe was kidnapped while working for an oil company doing energy exploration in the Niger River Delta. The context of the picture is that the gunmen brought him in to a undisclosed location to meet with members of the media to show that he was ok and that their demands should be met.

They don't bring jobs. The oil companies swoop in there, bring their own people and pay off whatever corrupt politician is in charge of the place. The people see no royalties or benefit from the companies extracting their nation's wealth.

There may be a few exceptions, but just about every oil company pays royalties when drilling in a foreign land. Those royalties are negotiated by the country's government. Hell, most of the time 3rd world countries beg big oil companies to extract the oil because they don't have the capabilities to do it themselves.
