Anyone ever done it? I'm about to get laid off from my job, and according to the estimator on the website I should be able to collect a little less per week than I make now in take home. Does anyone know how the estimator compares to the actual amount you get? And do they taxes out of that?
Also, any tips or info I would need to know? 4/26/2008 3:20:38 PM |

the estimator was spot on for me when i collected, i got it through a state porganization, but i think its federally taxed (taxed just like income) 4/26/2008 4:31:33 PM |

I've done it. I only got about 60% of the pay I was making on unemployment, but oh well. It took almost 2 months for me to get it since my previous employer didn't respond to the unemployment notice so it kept getting drug out. As far as taxes go, you can have them tax it a certain amount if you want to or take the whole thing. Just know that if you don't have them take it out, you'll have to account for it April 15. Since I was out of a job for 2 months, I needed cash in a pretty bad way, so I didn't have them take any taxes out. 4/26/2008 5:27:54 PM |

I collected unemployment for 6 months. It wasn't fun but it definitely helped out. The estimator is incredibly accurate. They can take taxes out, but I don't recommend it if you need the money. The taxes taken out are much less (like 10%) because it falls under a different tax scheme, 1099 or something. I forget, its better to deal with it later.
I would get the debit card they offer you and not the direct deposit to your account. It definitely helps out with budgeting.
snewf, depends if it was part time or full time and if you had worked there for more than 6 months. go to website and see what happens. ncesc.org. its not going to hurt trying. do you have parents that live in nc? If so, put there address down. Unemployment is state based but so long as you don't move out of the country, you should be fine wherever you are. 4/27/2008 3:20:38 PM |

I did it and it is a great thing, I got right around 50% of my salary from it. I delayed the taxes on it, just bc you never know how long it will take to find a new job. I honestly loved making money while relaxing at home browsing careerbuilder.com for 2 months 4/27/2008 3:25:04 PM |

I didn't know there was an estimator (I also don't know about collecting unempoyment), so I went over to the website and checked it out. It said:
Quote : | "Weekly Benefit Amount $Texas Earnings Allowance $Texas" |
So I have a question. What is the difference between the "weekly benefit amount" and the "earnings allowance"?

another benefit of the fair tax is that the gov collects money from drug deals 4/27/2008 4:10:45 PM |

earning allowance means you can make up to this amount of $texas, while still qualifying for unemployment for that week.
For instance, if one was to take a bartending job during the week, you can report you only made under the limit so that you can still collect the moneys. 4/27/2008 6:03:01 PM |
