So the Navy (and later, the USMC) are getting rid of their EA-6b Prowler electronic warfare aircraft, and replacing it with an EW variant of the Super Hornet. The rumor going around a while back was that the new aircraft might be called the "EA-18G Shocker". I don't know if there was ever any truth to that or not, but the nickname has kinda stuck, even though it ended up being called the Growler.

however, i thought TWW might be amused at the patches and stickers that people have had made...

I've never actually seen anyone wear the patch, but I've seen them stuck up on the walls in paralofts, bars, etc...and i've seen the sticker displayed in ready rooms and on ski lifts around the area.

here's my hope, though:

To avoid confusion over the radios, Super Hornets are referred to as "Rhinos" at the boat (and sometimes in general, informally) in order to distinguish them from the A/B/C/D model Hornets. I cannot fathom that they'd use the name "Growler" at the boat, because it could so easily be confused with "Prowler" over the radio (which is why many people thought it would never be named the Growler to begin with).

What I'm hoping is that--while the PC-police would never allow it in any official, public context, maybe they'll be able to get away with calling it the Shocker for radio calls during carrier ops.
