You should be able to take the cone off, so long as he isn't licking at the incision excessively. Just keep an eye on him with it off and put it on him when you leave the house.

I had my pup neutered when he was 6 months old and the vet gave him back to me without a cone. She said the stitches were on the inside and not to worry as long as he didn't spend too much time giving it attention.
