we're going on our honeymoon and she's going to come by the house and take care of my 3 cats for an entire week. she may or may not sleep at the house, but i've told her she can. i'm going to stock the fridge with booze. she's going to feed them, clean out their poopies, and give them lots of love because they're used to getting lots of attention each day.
how much do i pay her to do this? she's one of my bridesmaids, i.e. a pretty close friend, so i'm curious what everyone thinks is reasonable?

I usually get like $150-$200 + $50 food stiped for a week to dog sit. I assume the rates would be similar.
However, the dog requires walking and like 5 meds at certain times and junk. Adjust accordingly. 4/29/2008 7:50:53 PM |

when i took care of my neighbor's dogs in high school for a week i got like 20 or 40 bucks
that's probably about right
^^that too, cats are pretty self sufficient. our neighbor (back home) now wanted us to cat sit her kittens, just to go over and play with them a couple times a day. obviously, grown cats aren't very playful, so just a check on the litter box or maybe throwing something at them to get them to move should be enough.

if you would leave your cats alone in a house by themselves for 7 days with someone coming by ONCE to check on them, then you're a fucking douchnozzle
dog sitting requires a lot more than cat sitting. i was thinking $100 plus a fridge full of beer should be good. besides, she has cats of her own, so i know for a fact she wouldn't stay overnight half the time4/29/2008 7:54:22 PM |

if you're a pet owner then you should take responsibility and make sure they are taken care of when you leave town for 7 days. it's cruel to leave them alone for days on end with no human interaction, especially when they're so used to having that kind of interaction on a daily basis.
besides, if you leave 3 cats by themselves for 7 days you'd have to leave like 10 litter boxes for them.

you don't leave them by themselves, no
you have someone come in once or twice a day and clean the boxes, fill the water, and check the food. cats aren't exactly known for their human interaction. what do you do with your cats that they would go insane for not seeing you for a week? they have plenty of entertainment between themselves anyway. 4/29/2008 8:18:13 PM |

his family (tschudi) has 7 cats and they do in fact leave them alone when they go on vacation. however like 4 of them are outside cats and don't interact with people anyway and the other inside cats don't really interact with people either. it'd be hard to go over and play with them. they do leave like 10 litter boxes and their house is so huge that if you went to find the cats you wouldn't be able to. i know because they DID have someone to come check once over a period of like 4 or 5 days and that someone was me. i just went and made sure they all had water and i petted the ones that came near me. tried to find the other ones, couldn't, and left.

^well, guess what? my cats are the exact opposite. when they hear a key in the door they come running, and they meow at you when you walk in the door, they rub on your legs and follow you around, and headbutt you until you pet them. they're very personable and sweet - so i refuse to leave them alone for 7 days without having someone give them the attention they deserve everyday.
my kitties get so much attention, they really are attention whores. they love to cuddle, and i just can't bear the thought of them being without any personal human time for 7 days straight.

but i agree, i don't leave my cat alone because she is super needy. like SUPER needy. i would feel bad. but it def depends on the cat. if you own like an 11 year old cat, it is probably fine to just chill for a few days (that is what tschudi's parents have).
but in your situation if you stocked the fridge with booze i'd say pay her gas money and either take her out to a nice dinner when you get back or just give her like $50. i mean she's a friend, friend's should do it for FREE! i'd say the booze would be enough! 4/29/2008 8:21:56 PM |

I use to dog sit (for family friends who had 5 little dogs) and I would get something like $20 a day. I'd go over twice a day to let the dogs out, feed them, and hang out with them. I usually would get a drink and watch some TV while playing fetch. It was fun and easy money. Just a little annoying sometimes to take time out of my day to drive over there because it was a little out of the way. 4/29/2008 8:43:47 PM |

I did this for a friend recently, they left beers in the fridge, took me out to lunch, and gave me a small bottle of nice vodka.
I would have done it for free, but they insisted.
I'm sure she won't care what you give her being she is one of your best friend (bridesmaid) and this is your honeymoon. Cats are very easy to take care of so I wouldn't go overboard with what you give her (lunch, food/drink at the house, and maybe a tank of gas).

leaving cats alone for a few days and having someone come by once or twice isn't bad advice. again it depends on the cats and the owners but its not like its cruel. vets recommend this for cats who don't board well in boarding facilities. geez. if you have someone come by once in 3 or 4 days they'll be fine. maybe 2-3 times for a week. i mean if you're uncomfortable with it that is fine, but it doesn't mean its bad advice. my vet does the same thing with her cats because its less stressful on them than boarding. so chill out with the hate for people that leave their cats alone for a few days at a time--that doesn't mean they are animal abusers. if your uncomfortable then have your friend come over. take her out to lunch or dinner and maybe pay for her gas. it isn't that hard. problem solved.4/29/2008 9:19:39 PM |
